Brand new to your website. Just bought a very nice, low mileage, stock 86 turbo T. What would be the first 3 things you would suggest for better performance in a daily driver?

scanmaster, fuel pump hotwire, and gut the cat. But either keep it stock or plan to spend lots of cash once the bug bites you! The list never ends. Honestly I'd put some miles on it and wait for things to break, and I promise it will happen. Get a few thousand miles and some repairs under your belt and see how things look before worrying about adding power, but the sm and fuel pump hotwire are a must even on a stock car.

A fuel pump, hotwire kit for the fuel pump and a adjustable fuel pressure regulator and drive it and leave it alone and maybe a turbo tweak chip. Just makes it run better all around.

Welcome to our website and the dark side.
Step1 start reading
Step2 keep reading
Step3 reread.

Good luck

Step 1. Don't go WOT until you take care of EVERYTHING on this list... Valve springs, timing chain (port and inspect the timing cover/oil pump while it's off), plugs, wires, fuel pump (with hanger mods), hotwire kit, scan tool, PS valve cover breather bypass, trans cooler, flush ALL fluids including rear diff and brakes, new 60# injectors with matching chip, check upper PS A-arm bushing, weld crack in driver side header, port the turbo elbow, new Delco or Denso(only) 02 sensor, new Delco(only) PCV valve, quality adjustable fuel pressure regulator, new vacuum line check valves, replace ANY vacuum lines that will turn your fingers black, replace the 3 hoses on the wastegate circuit no matter what (keep the 'T' oriented correctly), replace the radiator if the bottom of it is clogged, remove the resistor out of the fan, replace the flexable MAF pipe with a hole in it with a solid unit, aftermarket boost gauge and temp gauge, and a full spring cleaning.

You'll notice that your stock GN will outrun every "11 second" car you come across on the street. THEN decide if you want to make it faster.

Step 2 ????

Step 3 Profit!!!

Congrats, Gary!
X2 on all the above
Get a Scanmaster ASAP
Its not a performance upgrade as such
it just keeps you from blowing everything up...
Adj. fuel pressure regulator
upgrade the fuel pump & get a hotwire kit
Get addicted to this site & Vortex & gn/ttype
especially the "spring cleaning" on gnttype.orghttp://www.gnttype.org/& take it slow... not on the road of course...

Thanks everybody! Sounds like everyone pretty much agrees on the priorities. I will take your advice and get started on the spring cleaning, get a scanmaster & do the hot wire kit right away. Thanks again, Gary

The only thing I would add to all of the good advice already given is if after reading and rereading you still have questions, don't be afraid to ask if you don't know or understand anything. These cars are unique. The vast knowledge available on this site as well as the others already mentioned, is unparalleled. Welcome to the board.
