This is a fine time to have your damn heat go out when it's 19deg out!! At 4:40 am my damn heating unit was making a god awefull noise so my wife went out and turned it off, woke me up and told me about it. so I turned it back on and nothing!! No outdoor fan motor, it's locked up! I will have to fix it today before the rain and colder weather comes tomarow...

Nice way to wake up....

I feel your pain, the other week I let the dogs out at 2:00 AM and the downstairs was really cold, outside temp was 14. I checked and the heat pump was not running (would'n do much good at 14 anyway) and the strip was not working either. I had the next day off to go deer hunting plus I was starting to get sick as well. Long story short, I stayed home and fixed the problem, missed a day of deer hunting, and got really sick I guess from working outside in the cold on the heat pump. Problem was a bad capacitor on the condenser fan and the compressor was going out on high head temp. Still don't know why the strip heat did not work but does now.

Good luck Scot,
Jim

Well after taking it apart I found that the bearings are shot on the condenser fan motor which in turn was likely causing a voltage drain on the rest of the system so I looked further and saw that the contacts on the contactor were ruined also, more than likely due to the voltage drain on it.

So i'm off to get a condenser fan motor, a Capacitor and a new contactor and hope nothing else was shot due to this damn motor..

Ya, but if anybody can fix these kinds of things, you're the guy!

It's all fixed and warm now!

Sun is out and seems like tis was the only day to do something like this for some time because it's supposed to get REAL cold and rainy!

Germs don't live outside. People get sick when they are inside with others. With everyone inside and the heat on, it's a breeding ground for germs/viruses.

I know, but I sure felt like crap after laying on the ground in 20 degree weather. It was more likely I got it on my flight home two days before as the guy behind me hacked the entire flight.

New low record? I don't recall NC getting much colder than about 17.

Don't know if it was a record but both of my thermometers read 14 degrees at 2:00 AM that night. The coldest I have ever seen here was -2 many years ago and of course I went duck hunting that morning. We had to break the ice with an ax to get the boat in and broke ice alway to the blind, sure did some stupid stuff when I was younger.

Edit: Yes it was a record: 11/22/08 : AccuWeather.com Past Month Weather Data for China Grove, NC

Scot, glad you are up and running again.
