My car has been a little slow on turning over, I think it has a short (slow drain on the battery) or the alternator is junk. I took a friend for a ride in the car, it was all good then I realized I forgot to turn the lights on, and then I turned the fan on. Lights were pretty dim and then I hit it and under WOT it the ALT light starting flashing on and off and the car was cutting out like it wasn't firing.

So I let off and drive it back like a grandma, and everything is okay. Oil pressure gets real low at idles (8-10) but the car is almost dying (stumbling between 600-1000rpm) if I keep it at 1000rpm its fine at 20psi. So put the battery charger on the car, and after it fires up like a champ, oil psi is fine, etc. Go for a drive. The turbo builds boost fine but the car doesnt pickup any power. It feels the same at 20psi as it does at -15psi, and when I let off the throttle, I don't get the backpressure noise.

Anyone have any ideas of what it could be? I hope its not hurt already. BTW it is an 87 motor in another car.

Thank You
Charles

where I said backpressure noise, I mean I don't get the blow off sound of boost blowing off when I let off of the throttle.

My WH1 acted alot like what you are describing when the alternator died. The plugs couldn't fire hot enough to fire under boost, but idle - off idle - not pushing it was O.K. Changed the alternator and plugs and all was well again. Check your charging system / battery voltage and go from there.

after I charged the battery, it fires fine under WOT, just the boost gauge shows 20psi and it feels like no boost, and when I let off I dont hear the blowoff, it seems like the boost isnt reaching the motor.

I dont see how you could build 20 PSI of boost then hear the blowoff. Something seems fishy to me obviously.

:confused:Ok guys here is the deal you know how when your under WOT and you let off the throttle you hear the blow off sound (sounds like pigeons), well now the car does not do it anymore. the sounds is of course caused when the throttle plate closes and the boost hits the closed throttle plate causing the turbo to back spin. Well since the car builts boost but the motor acts like it isnt receiving the air and it isnt blowing the boost off (as described above), it makes me think there is a turbo or intercooler hose off but we have check all that stuff already:confused:  we really need to figures this out. what could cause the car not to come to life under boost. It still feels like a non turbocharged 6 cylinder while at 20 psi???

Well, one way I found boost leaks in the past was to pressurize the air inlet with a shop-vac and spray soapy water on everything between the MAF and the throttle body. The car I did this on had a "ram-air" setup with an enclosure around the air filter, so I put the shop-vac on "blow" and stuffed rags around the hose to the enclosure so the air going in was still filtered, but as long as the shop-vac is clean you could probably do it more easily without the extra precautions. I'm curious to know what you find, as it still doesn't make much sense...the boost gauge is showing 20 lbs of boost but the car doesn't feel like it...any chance it is something basically mechanical like brakes dragging, reeeaaly loose torque converter etc?

I have the same problem. I was showing off the car to my cousin and the car was showing 16 psi and I heard the turbo but it felt like a regular old N/A V6. I wasn't really getting the pigeon sounds either. I don't know what it could be. It was running like a champ a few days ago. But it runs fine when I am just driving normally.
