It's about time for a turbo upgrade. That means my heat shield won't fit.

Should the hood pad be removed? Mine isn't soaked with oil and grease, but I don't want to start a fire.

Is the lack of a shield an issue?

If you remove the Hood pad w the shield. I doubt the paimy on the Hood can withstand high temps. I would see if you could Fab some brackets up. Come to think of it I never heard Turbo too big for shield but if that's the case as I said make it work. I do know if you change downpipes 99% of the time shield needs to be trimmed..

That must be some big turbo if the shield won't clear. And, no, it's not a fire hazard. People run without the shield all the time.

Even a cheap eBay turbo blanket for $50 would make all your worries disappear. And IMO they look better than shields.

Unless he means the downpipe with the turbo. If not, then your correct...even my billet 67HPQ fits under a shield, and it's a mid 900hp unit

Thank you for all of the replies.

The reason why I was asking is because most of the engine shots I see on TR's all have a non-stock turbo and no shield.

I'm really not sure if the one I'm upgrading to will fit under my stock shield. I guess we will see. I'm one of those guys who really doesn't care about appearance under the hood. I just want it to RUN and have everything right. Chrome?? ...no. That's for my avatar.

I just don't want to set my car on fire. Yeah,I could get another one. But,the time/work I have done so far is irreplaceable.

About the blankets... I rarely see them. I read pro's/con's. I'm always keeping an open mind to all of this stuff.

Thanks again.

What turbo? Very good chance that you don't have to worry at all about it not fitting under the shield. Sometimes it's a little difficult to get the J-bracket to work, but you can do it. That's the only problem I had when mounting my turbo. I had to remove the plate on the turbo that had the two bolts, then put it through the J Bracket, then put it back on the turbo.

I'm not sure what turbo. I will be bringing my GN to a shop that knows these cars and have them install the best turbo for my plans. Best quality and best match for my plans. ...with a warantee on the work and turbo.

I'm just concerned that I'll leave there and catch fire if I have no shield.

Meanwhile,I'm sure they know what they are doing,I've had much work done there before.

Just doing my homework here!

Thanks for the reply.

I can't even remember where my turbo shield is. I think my turbo looks better. (and the car weighs less without it :) )

I sure hope your builder knows how to do turbo Buicks, if not, you will have wasted a lot of money. How long will the warranty be on the work and turbo?

Yeah, what shop? I'm from the Albany area also and I'm not aware of any shops that do turbo buicks. Not saying there isn't one, I just don't know of it. Other than
my GN I haven't seen a GN in the Albany area for years and years! I see a few a Lebanon Valley Dragway.

I did have to move the mounting holes on the shield roughly 1/2" when I began running a .85 exhaust housing.

I think harris speed works in penn has done a few trs. I know they've done some turbo ls builds and modded a few lightnings
