Think I may have found out why my 2004R keeps spewing fluid from the top vent...can you say WAY overfilled? A picture is worth a thousand words.

I cut the notch in the dipstick where the pan meets the bottom edge of the case...it might not be perfect, but it's a far cry from 1.25" above there like it shows as full on the dipstick.

Sorry for the blurry image.

That's ok, the $5 I lost in fluid is minuscule compared to the $55 I saved by not falling into the "name game" (aka Lokar, etc...).

I agree, $55 insane. So the mark you made is where the full mark should be?

I sure hope so.

So the mark you made is where the full mark should be?

According to the posts made on here by the "experts", the fluid is supposed to only be up to the bottom of the case/top of the pan while the motor is running. I'm getting this from where they said to start the motor, get it warmed up, keep the car running and loosen the pan bolts enough so the excess fluid can drip out. Once dripping stops, that's full. (Unless I read the searched posts incorrectly.)

Since the pan was already off, I took the liberty of marking the dipstick at the bottom of the case and simply used a razor blade to put two little slices in it, removing the excess, creating the notch.

Theoretically, and practically speaking, that's where it would be if you did it with the motor running and in neutral. (My tranny pan is parallel to the ground with the car on level ground, therefore the level of the fluid should be as well.) As long as I warm the motor and put it in neutral to check it, it should be correct. By the way, my tranny came with the stock GN dipstick and tube, but since it's in an "import" ('82 Datsun 280ZXT) I couldn't use it, therefore, the aftermarket one.

Hope that makes sense. Your mileage may vary.
