First let me say that you guys really seem to know the 200r4 trans in and out which is why I am posting this on this board. so my question is this , I removed the governor from my 89 caprice the other day and it took a substantial amount of effort to do so. the governor seemed to be stuck in the bore. When i got it out the teeth on the nylon gear that ride on the out-put shaft were pretty well mangled on one side. I suspect this to be why the car only had first and reverse. Now that I am trying to install a new governor it will not line up with the bore in the transmission, it appears to be being held off by a large gear? towards the front of the hole the gov. spins in. any input on what might be going on is greatly appreciated.my symptoms before hand were no up-shift from 1st gear, no park, only 1st and reverse.

Is it the output shaft that is keeping it from going in or is it the speedometer gear? Try pulling the speedometer gear out and see if the governor will go in.

Yes the governor looks like the on in the picture.

I have already removed the speedo gear.

the gov won't line up with the hole in the trans it is sliding aginst a sprag? or something that is located toward the front of the trans but is visible through the hole the gov weights spin in.

Well apparently a c-clip had freed itself inside the trans allowing the foreward input drum to slide backwards blocking the governor opening and preventing me from removing the driveshaft. mystery solved.
