I test drive lots of cars, SUVs, trucks and vans. My method up to a few days ago was to start the vehicle, let it idle for 5 - 10 minutes to get up to operating temperature, drive slowly about 300 yards pretty much going through 1st and into 2nd at about 15mph, and then nail it for a straight 1/4 mile (up to about 70mph) and then decellerate for 1/4 mile checking brakes, suspension, etc. I then turn around and nail it the other way for 1/4 mile and decellerate the other 1/4. The reason I do this is because my test area is configured in this way. When I get to the end of the first run, I regularly smell a burnt/burning smell but have never noticed a decrease or slip. I don't smell it at the end of the 2nd run.
I changed my technique so that now on the first run I accellerate normally through the gears. On the return trip I nail it. I never smell anything doing it this way. Any clue as to what I was smelling? These are cars that are stored for weeks at a time before I get to them. Clutches? Brake linings?
