The whole concept of the clunker bill is stupid & expires by this sept.

1st most people driving a clunker are poor (like me). So they don't have the funds to go BUY NEW anyway.

2nd if I was rich & looking to buy new I would go out and buy a $100 crap box to get my voucher

3rd I bet the dealers are onto this & JACK up the price so there is no real savings to anyone

My Message to MADMAN OBAMA is FKYU I will keep MY CLUNKER You keep the CHANGE!

You got the first two right. But the dealer isn't going to get away with jacking the price up on a new ordinary car without the customer just going somewhere else. Everyone can see the sticker price and can find out what the rebates are. Hell most people can get a good idea of what invoice price is without too much digging around. Add to that the fact that new car sales are in the tank, so most dealers are going to lay out a pretty reasonable deal just to keep making a sale. Basically the government (and therefore the taxpayer) is putting a huge rebate on almost every new vehicle for anyone smart enough to find a pile of crap to trade in. And since it has to be a BRAND NEW car, most of the people that will be getting the rebate are those that could easily afford to walk in and pay sticker price for it. If they could figure out how to put this deal on 2-4 year old used cars then it might take "clunkers" out of the hands of people that are actually piling the miles on them. But if they did that then the dealers would definitely be jacking the prices and making a killing.
After all that, only then can you start crunching numbers on how much energy, raw materials, pollution, and waste goes into the building of any new car, and compare that to the few extra gallons of gas that the "clunker" is going to use before it dies of natural causes. It's flawed logic that's gonna cost us a pile of money that we don't have and the world will be no "greener" than it is right now.

But, it sounds good.

Edit: That is quite the poster child they used for that article. What is the epa rating of a GNX?

Eh, it's not like anybody is going to trade one in for $4500 anyway. Pretty sure the EPA rating is high enough that they wouldn't qualify. Any publicity is good publicity.

The cool thing about the whole deal would be the scavengers like myself who could find all sorts of free stuff to "borrow" off of said clunkers before they got scrapped. I'm sure they'll keep good track of VINs to be certain they get scrapped but they won't be checking individual cars very close. :) Man I love junk. Does anybody else here grow a chubby when they get to cannibalize an old car for free?

Just realized that the last sentence will probably end up in JOHNDEEREGN's sig.

Oh, most definitely Bob. Although I can't do that anymore here in CA. I miss KS and my dads 5 acres with trees. :(

Fyi

I believe you have to own the car and have it insured for the past year to qualify. I was going to buy a clunker and get the wife a new Cobalt--there is one sale they lost.

The problem with the goverment is too many STIPULATIONS!

In one way they think all the programs set forth are for the good of the country. But in reality they don't do jack squat.
