number of teeth on the flywheel and mini starters

Ron, 166 teeth. If you get a SBC mini starter for a 168 tooth flywheel and mill some material off the top it'll work. I have an extra summit brand SBC starter if interested PM me I got it cheap on the clearance table and I think I'm shipping you stuff anyway from ebay? I would've bought one of these if I would've known before hand.

One of the only vendors I could find that makes a mini starter for our motors. The GM "mini" starters are crap, I've broken three of them so far. They don't hold up well to heat and have plastic part that ends up breaking.

turbobuick, I thought 168 also, then I went out and counted and I got 160
teeth, do not see how I could have been off 8, I could see 1-3, then I would recount, but 8 seems a lot to be off, well I will do a recount, ala Florida, cause I just had that balanced with my new motor, what would or could happen if I used it?? Also any part# for that starter say from autozone, and would they also carry the right bolts

JW told me it was 166 teeth and 13.75" diameter according to what a JW flexplate is which may be different. If its 160 the 158 tooth SBC would fit better but the pattern isn't even close. The autozone starter is just an LT1 stater, so any mid 90's f-body, b-body corvette with LT1 should work.
tbuick, I just went out and measured the OD of my flywheel and it is close to
13 7/16" and the inside ring is 12.5", so I do not know what the frick is going on at this moment, I think I need whiskey,lol, tell me more about this starter you have USA made, not china I hope and tell me about this milling that needs to be done, I do not have acces to a machine shop, and what type of trouble can I get myself in if I do this myself and is it difficult, more info please.

Hi, I am running the original flywheel and I went to Napa auto parts and bought a new mini starter. It is p#N17579 There are two different mini starters for our application. One is like the one for sale on turbobuics.com. this is NOT the one I got. I got the one that is from a later GM model application and is supposed to have allitlle more cranking power. Anyway I did buy the now bolts but it was easy when you have the starter right in front of you because Napa should have them in stock. It is a direct bolt on, no mods are required. I did not have to shim mine and it works perfect. It is a tiny little thing, but because of the gear reduction it turns my motor over FAST. good luck

That application sounds correct. When I went to pick up the starter from Napa, I removed it from the box and we were able to get the correct ones at the same time. The counterman told me they were common starter bolts and they had them in stock. One thing to note and you should look at is the main power and solenoid connection. It is allittle different. However It worked fine for me.
