NY Fire and Police Chiefs under fire

The 9-11 commission hearings are going on right now. People were actually booing these 2 guys. They are really getting there a$$es handed to them by the commission about how each department made numerous mistakes during the incident.

Well, I guess the big wheels have to blame somebody.

That's ****ed up....those guys may have made mistakes but they were also putting their lives on the line. It's not like they had a lot of practice responding to jets crashing into the World Trade Center

The booing I saw was from families of the firefighters that had radios that didn't work. That might have helped a few guys.

I'm all for true fact-finding hearings to determine what you can do better the next time. But, to try and second guess actions and decisions that were split second made and in the heat of battle with the worst terrorist attack EVER on American soil is going over the top in my view.

I'm sure each and every one of those guys from the top on down made each decision based on what they knew at the moment and for the single purpose of saving lives.

If they want to point fingers, how about the person(s) responsible for issuing the "It's safe in the building, go back to your offices" announcement? In light of what had happened, evacuation seems to have been the ONLY thing that should have been stressed until the situation was accurately appraised.

I understand the families being mad about it. But, those were the same radios these guys use every day. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Adapt and overcome. Firefighters use that motto too. This was too much to overcome.

If the fire and police chiefs went before the mayor and city council of new york BEFORE 9-11 and ask for everything needed to handle a situation like the twin tower attack, they would have been taken out of there in straight jackets, and promptly fired. The cities of this country are not willing to spend what it would truly take to handle an all out attack of a city. They are comfortable with playing the odds that it will NOT happen. The Fire chief can only spend the money they are GIVEN.

Like I said above, the beg wheels have to blame someone for this, and the 2 chiefs are the scapegoats.

Hey Captain Mark about your radio comment , your way off base there about adapt and overcome . For one im a current FDNY fireman , for two the radio thing is the dept bought and pushed into service these "New" Radios with out properly testing , they knew that the radios were bad from US telling them before 9/11 but since they had already spent the $$$ they werent about to ditch them , guess what after 9/11 we went back to the old radios . Now the bottom line with the radios is that someone pushed these into service before findng out that they would work right and , why that happened makes you wonder whos maybe taking kickbacks from who here . Also Fire Commish. Von essen is a scumbag and hated by most of the job . The best thing he could have done was be dead under a girdder , he was no friend to " The Brothers" and he was a Fireman at one time , he went from being our union president to Fire commisioner . He was the ultimate sell out , and once in the commish seat did nothing but desrtoy the moral and screw us . Now you know . I want to thank all the Dept.s across the country for the support they gave us thereafter . i see your a Firefighter too so you heard the story from a Brother in NY and thats the deal , be safe .

yea. the little guys alway get stepped on. my father has been a fireman for 38 yrs now. at the present time he is a fire inspector. i have alot of respect for fireman..but cop can kiss my ass.

when there is a fire a fireman is alway runing in the build while everyone is running out, now if you ask me that takes alot of balls and guts. i give much respect to someone how save lives for a living.

cop alway show up to bust yous balls, cause they feel tuff since everyone was pounding there a$$ out in high school.

dude i live in the city. and when that world trade center sh!t happen alot of people including law inforcement was robbing and stealing from the near by stores and vendor. i know this cause i was there for the first few day of clean-up. what a horrible seen and the smell is of buring flesh and junk.

i will give blood for a fireman. i was very impress to see firefighter working and just keep working 12-24 hrs shift. i meet on guy (fire fighter) on the seen. he was off duty and he was still digging in search for people.

man i don`t like to think about this **** or ever talk about it. cause it makes me so F$%King Pi$$.

What hurt the FDNYs radios was the main antenna was on the World Trade Center and it came down with the building.

The NYPD had an antenna elsewhere and a communication center in the Metrotech building in Brooklyn.

Regarding the hearings if Former President Clinton did his job there would not have been a 911! That is only my opinion!

Thanks for the info bro. Down here in Dallas, we don't get the skinny on what's going on up there. Just what we read in the newspapers. I just want you boys at FDNY to know that all us other guys have supported you through all this. You guys lived the ultimate nightmare, and all of us felt it. And I would hate a fine fire department as yours, (the best in the world in my opinion) may look bad over the 9-11 thing. I don't want the media, or some faggot politicians to try and make you guys look bad just for publicity.

Oh well, you guys have fought through harder crap than these hearings. The FDNY will survive, but it may be with a new commissioner. And it sounds like that may not be a bad thing.

I think Rudy had the right outlook. We all learned a lot from this. It was like another but different Pearl Harbor. It had never happened before and the logistics were prepped for, but totally unknown as to all the variables. The FDNY and the NYPD both handled the situation above and beyond what we could have reasonably expected. The blame needs to be placed where it belongs, the terrorist. The introspection here should be to improve things for the future, not to score political points or to better your position in a wrongful death suit against the government by those who lost friends and family.

I think NYC is to blame alot of things , the bottom line is they are cheap bastards and equipment wise. The FD takes second to PD . For instance our Hazmat unit was said to be good but we dont have a big unit . Pretty bad for a city of 8 million . Were all lucky that more things werent hit that day , there could have very well been no Fire dept left had that happened . All said and done we Tried to do what we could with what we had , The Construction equipment made the biggest diff there along with the Iron workers and others . You just werent going to get into spots w/o it . If you were there you would understand it better , it was a big mess more than words can describe . Alot of people really tried to help out though and that was really awsome to see that . I havent been following the whole thing , as far as im concerned it happened and its over and we can only remember those lost , make sure these Fanatical A - holes cant pull this again , Hunt them and kill them whatever it takes . I belive thats what we are doing now . Forget these stupid political B.S shows . Use that money to find some of these America haters and string them up .

Sounds like we have some of the same problems you guys are having, at least budget wise. I really believe that our city would completely do away with the fire department if they could. They look at us as a necessary evil. A drain on the city's bank account. Whenever we ask for something....equipment, new radios, haz mat unit...whatever, they kick and scream bloody murder, and usually just flat refuse us. But, when the crap hits the fan, no matter what the emergeny is, we are expected to handle the job with ZERO problems. Then, after the event when we tell our bosses we could have done the job better with more personnel, or better equipment, we are called whiners and told to shut up. You know, for years we have been telling our big bosses that something like 9-11 was gonna happen somewhere, but I think most city officials didn't really believe it would. Even now, afer this terrible event, city hall still says "we just don't have the money" and yet still have enough money to fly our city councilmen and mayor all over the world on "business trips" and buy expensive artwork for the city, and blah, blah blah.....I could go on forever. We haven't had a decent pay raise in 10 years. Somehow at raise time, the city is out of money.

It's a good thing this job is personally rewarding, or none of us would be doing it. Too much BS.
