I understand your problem but is has taken me two years and a blown new motor in order to slow down and learn some things. How fast do you want to go? Define that and people will respond. My goal is a 13.5 car and I will get there with alot of patience and a slow by slow change in order to make it right. Brad

I really just want my all stock 84 GN to run as efficiently as possible, I dont want a bracket racer! Basically my stumbling blocks are as follows...I put in the boost gauge, the knock gauge, the adjustable wastegate rod. the car runs rich, always has, some black smoke if I let it idle, also sounds like its "loading up" after I let it idle for awhile, but never backfires or anything. That is problem one. Problem two...it will make a solid 10# of boost with the rod shortened, not a pound more. Before the adjustable wastegate rod it was making 7 pounds, the entire life of the car with 70,000 miles. Turbo was rebuilt and is fine. All vacuum lines properly connected, no leaks. "Y" connector properly installed. The only suction I hear is the stock aircleaner beggin for oxygen, you can actually hear it almost 'hissing" air in, air cleaner element new. New plugs, plug wires. Never beaten just weekend driven'. ANY HELP?? thanks...Scott.

I do not have an answer but I may have guess. Please all hot air owners respond! I have an 85 Gn which is the same thing as your car. The problem might be the exhaust system and the passenger side exhaust header. I put on a set of Poston headers and a Hooker high flow exhaust system along with an adj, waste gate and destroyed a new motor with 24 ibs boost. (went from a stock 15.0 qtr to a 14.00) Follow the knock gauge like it is code blue. I now run only 11 lbs boost until my fuel system is upgraded and I can tune the car. Brad

I too put on an aftermarket exhaust to free things up, and tossed the catayltic convertor...it just seems like this problem of running rich is a common recurring theme out here in posting land!

Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? Get one, maybe your stocker isn't up to par anymore. Not sure where the best deal is on regulators, do a search or look at vendors websites for ideas. I saw that Poston has their listed for $104. You should be able to find a little cheaper then that. Or see if you can find a cheap used stock regulator just to see if that is indeed the prob. Put a 9in K&N on that beast too!!

yeah, as far as the stock aircleaner, I can hear that hole at the front of the airbox sucking like a giant vacuum leak! what mods do I have to do to fit the K/N air filter element? also, what size/model # for the K/N filter?? thanks for helpin out

I bet you could find a nice used 9in K&N(post in the parts wanted section, maybe a regulator too, if you don't mind used). Then the 9in just attaches to the end of the MAF sensor. Just have to take the stock filter and housing out. Nick

I dont mind buying a new one for piece of mind, what model do I look for, I went to the KN site and they have about 1,000 to choose from! Once I get it I just clamp it on? thanks

Here is some good reading on your question.

Taking readings.
You will need a scan tool to get the readings. There are other readings you will get also, like KR, Temp, IAC counts, O2 CC, MPH, LV8, Engine Temp, Chip Timing, MAF, TPS, etc etc. (With a OTC 4000E and 87 computer)
Here are some options.

Correction from an earlier post somehwere .... :D
TurboLink™ V4.x can be used on 84-85 ECM's (Call to make sure)

Happy reading!
