Re: 1997 Expedition 4.6L 2WD

Our family truckster has had a 401 trouble code for about a year now and I'm unsure how to diagnose the cause. The code is for detection of low EGR flow. Any suggestions from the expert techs out there?

probably just the EGR valve gone bad. check any hoses or sensors going to it for good connection as well.

when i had a side job reading trouble codes for cars, EGR codes were actually more numerous than bad 02 sensors. especially on fords.

you may be able to pull the egr and clean the plunger where it seats. also in the early days ford had a filter in the egr solenoid the would clog up big time out here in the west. if it has one. make sure its clean. check for any carbon build up under the egr. ford has always had egr problems.

If it is probably a dpfe sensor. Thats the pressure sensor that controls egr. The most common code on a ford. It helps being a ford tech. Bob.
