off topic: 98 ranger overheating

Hope this thread is ok here.

Recently some fittings on my waterpump rusted through, so I was pretty much flushing and refilling my coolant daily. Got the fittings replaced, but now it overheats when idling for 5 minutes.

What confuses me is when it overheats, it makes loud clunking and banging noises near the rad hose and endtank, sounds like an animal trying to get out.

I've checked everything, flushed it again, but still can't find the damn cause!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The clunking and banging is the overheated coolant. Replace the thermostat and if that doesn't fix it the radiator is probably clogged.

Ahhh, never had a car overheat in my life, so I didn't know the sound.

I'll flush it out and replace the thermostat today then, thanks!

The noise could be the water boiling or you have a blown head gasket.

Did you stop to think it might actually be an animal trying to get out! ahhaha stranger things have been found in engine bays, and small animals have been the cause of over heating and other problems before...

All kidding aside, replace the t-stat, I bet the stock one is stuck. If that does not work then start checking things like your water pump, and radiator. Radiator should be checked first. Just make sure you DO NOT open or loosen anything while it's hot... I know you probobly know this but I had a friend get VERY badly burned because he thought he was smarter than his car...

Alright

I replaced the thermostat
Flushed the system, filled it 50/50 coolant/water
Replaced the radiator (seemed to flow pretty badly)

IT STILL OVERHEATS

it's driving me nuts

any more suggestions?

Maybe a cracked head, those motors do that. Check the cooling system to see if there are exhaust gasses inside. If the cooling system builds pressure before the motor gets warm then there is a problem somewhere.

I dont see/smell any exhaust gases, the coolant is nice and green and the oil is nice and clean. Could the head still be cracked?

Best thing to do is drain and save all coolant. Remove upper hose at radiator. Place a garden hose into the top of the radiator. Then turn on the water and start the engine. You should see good flow out the top hose if the impeller on the back of the water pump is working. If low flow, I would guess the impeller is rotted away. Replace the water pump then.

When you fill the cooling system, take a heater hose off the heater core to let air escape. Once the rad is full, or coolant comes out of the heater hose, put it back on and try it. Sounds like you have an air pocket behind the thermostat. Hopefully that is all, but those motors do crack heads like was mentioned above.
