I put an oil pressure gauge on my car today because I thought maybe I had some oil pressure problems( think my cam and lifters are worn out now, lots of top end rattle) What I found is very strange I have never run into it before.

When I started the car ( cold) the gage went to about 95 p.s.i. and if you just touch the gas it would go past 100 p.s.i. as the car warmed up the pressure slowly droped and with the temp at about 180 it settled out at about 10 p.s.i. at idle. When I give it gas it jumps up to 60 to 75 p.s.i. ( about half throttle).

I installed the line where the original sending unit was. The gauge is a cheap gauge but its mechanical and I cant belive it could be that bad. I am going to hook the gauge up to my GS in the morning and see what it does.

The motor now has 139000 on it and as far as I know it has never been apart so I dont think anythings been done to the pump ( no iron ring and no adjuster).

Thanks,

These cars aren't known for high oil pressure at an idle. Heavier weight oil will increase oil pressure. Your car is normal.

My 85 GN has a few less miles on it (118,xxx) and the oil pressure is almost identical to yours. Mine has around 13 at idle and when I take off from a light it goes up to about 32. When I race it, it almost follows the rpms exactly. When it shifts, the oil pressure is 55 psi and barely drops after the shifts. When I start mine up, it also goes to 95psi. I do run 20-50 oil so the pressure isn't so low at idle. Sounds about normal.

Thanks guys,
Iwas just a little shocked when it pegged the gauge, but as long as Im not the only one Ill just ignor the high pressure and whatch for 0 pressure. Thanks again.

I was always told that as long as you have at least 10lbs of oil pressure per 1000rpm then you are fine. To much cant be a bad thing in my book.
