Ok...drag racing no longer interests me.

I got to see the Montreal Grand Prix!! F1 baby!!...holy sh!t are those things fast.
I would venture to say that they are louder than top fuel by a tad.

I had no idea that the French Canadians were such racing fans, because they ALL showed up. It was like a working museum in our paddock. People would walk up, open the car door, pick up our tools....it was insane.

Just getting ready to bed down in South Western Virginia at a rest stop off of 81.

Yeah, road racing is pretty amazing.

Closest thing I have come to it is Karting. I was a die hard drag racer until a friend who worked at a kart track introduced me to the sport.

The adrenalin rush of 10+ minutes of going balls to the wall on a 1/4 mile 11 turn track with just a 6.5 hp kart doing 40 is amazing. I can't even imagine what the serious karts or F1 feels like. From what I understand karts are the only thing that can approximate the G forces in F1

anyway, that led to some canyon carving in friends cars. It really makes you look at drag racing in a different light. I still like it, but more as a science project for horsepower. The skill in driving around a road course is something else entirely.

I was a Indy last year and the thing that got me was the braking. I have never seen anything like it, sitting at the end of the front strech I was thinking no way they could make the turn, but I was wrong.

We were on the back side of the track. Those cars would go from 160+ to 30 for the big turn back there in about 2 seconds

I went several times to Indy until the tire debacle a few years ago when only three teams raced. Eventhough I got my money back and free tickets for the next year I never went back.

I still watch every race weekend.....if there's another debacle I can just change the channel instead of stewing over a wasted weekend.

The braking and direction changes are staggering to watch. I was also shocked by the shrill volume.....just sensory overload to watch 'em race live. A great time that everyone should experience at least once.

Ehh.. I'm not so sure about that.
A pair of fuel cars leaving the starting line rattles the earth underneath you
and blurs your vision. I know that first hand.:smile:

I have seen enough top fuel to know that it literally hurts when they leave the line....and you are two inches to the right of where you were first standing when they left.

F1....is deafening. Sharp pains in the ear drums. NO ONE was wearing hearing protection, including me - cuz I didn't know any better. Had to jam the fingers in there. No one else was...I felt like a puss.

When those things downshift, it sounds like the gearbox is going to explode.
We got to pit in front of the F1 garages. They actually have ferrings made that fit the inside of the concrete garages that make the entire interior look like something out of Star Wars.

I will always love drag racing, this was new to me and can in no way afford it.:biggrin:

Don't they spin those engines up to something insane like 18000 rpm?

I had to hold my ears watching the champ cars here at the Milwaukee mile.
I thought I could handle anything after listening to fuel cars without
ear protection, but those high revving motors really got to me.

I'm in to drag racing because you can "play" around on the street.

A real eye opener was when I went to Greece and went to ride what I thought were regular go-karts. Turned out to have a gearbox, slicks, 500cc 2stroke and 4 wheel discs.

I never in my life could've imagined something turning and stopping like that. If it weren't for the neck brace, there is no way I could've held my head up in the turns and braking.

The braking was unreal. I would come in from 80mph and have to slow to about 20 for a turn and every instinct is telling you to hit the brakes and I would have to force myself to wait until after I passed the point of self-preservation to hit the brakes and I still usually hit them too early. I had to mark my braking point at the corners and force myself to wait a little farther every lap to brake. Before the day was over I was late braking and going a little sideways into the turns. Totally addictive.

A guy I work with races shifter karts and wants me to buy one. I had a Margay 150 about 20 years ago and that thing went about 70mph and it handled real good.But got stupid a few times just to see if the cops could catch me.They didnt but I was almost pushing daisys when I got home and my dad was waiting in the garage. I love road racing. watching the formula cars run is awesome.They are real loud coming out of a turn and going into the turn also.Drag racing is cool but road racing has alot more to it.
