what EXACTLY is involved....is it just a box....a crap load of wires??? what do i need??

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/ecmsensors/8487ecm.html

that'll get you thru it.i'll give you the quick and dirty.you'll need:

87 ecm(junkyard or parts for sale section)
mat sensor(junkyard)
87 chip for your injectors
cal-pak out of your stock ecm(that's the little chip next to the prop chip)

it is recommended that you install your mat sensor in the inlet of your air filter.it's only one wire.then if you convert to an electric fan(also recommended)you can buy casper's fan harness and have the ecm control the fan.

so i get an 87 ECM...$35
Caspers fan relay.....$59
MAT sensor...............$???
electronic Fan...........$???

Check out the gnttype article that WFO is reffering to. It was written years ago, before Casper's even made the conversion accessories. I did mine 4-5 years ago and did not buy anything other than a ECM and electric fan from the junkyard. The MAT sensor and fan relay went in my pocket :D . The '87 TR type fan can be found on a V6 Fiero, but ther are many fans out there that will work fine (my brother put a dual fan from a Focus in his '86). The relay is nothing special, just a 30 amp automotive relay. An '87 chip for whatever injectors you have is what you need. Some chip makers might do a little extra tweaking with the '87 to '84 ECM conversion in mind (JL is good), but it is not necessary. Take the time to learn the stuff and do it yourself, it will aid you down the line. If you just refuse to do the wiring yourself then youve got the Casper's accessories to fall back on. In my case I just see it as spending extra $ that I dont have extra of.

there have been mixed reports about the maf.some say the stocker works others say you need to have your chip burned for the 84 maf calibration.

as far as the esc module, that's the first i've heard of that:confused: .i'm using my stocker.is the 87 esc a different part # than the 84?

for your used parts contact mike mccoy @ www.musclecarsalvage.com .he'll have everything you need at a good price:).

From what Ive seen, and I think it is mentioned in the gnttype.org article, is that the '84 MAF sometimes gave trouble with cold starting. The '87 is supposed to smooth it out. However I know of those who never thought nothing of it and ran the '84 MAF with no problem.
As far as the ESC module, I have never had an issue with that one before either. There is I believe a different part# for the '87. '83-'86 is the same. Not sure what the difference is, but I dont think it matters. Probably shaped different:confused:
As far as the '87 chips. My J.L. chip is the first that was actually burned for my car w/ '87ECM/37#inj. I have used a '87/36#inj R.A. chip and a '87/36#inj Casper's thumb wheel chip with good success. I have also used a 36# Thrasher chip which they say it is fine to use on a '84 w/ ECM conversion (the only thing they mention is that you should have a intercooler).

Funny, they mentioned to me it wouldnt be worth it unless i HAD the intercooler, and that it would cause all kinds of problems blha blha blah..

I think hes reffering to Thrasher.
Jay, I thought the street Thrasher chip was great for driveability (idle, etc), had it running pretty nice. It definately wasnt my first choice for performance though. I'll have to see how it works with my car when I get the engine back together. With the engine problems worked out and the car running like it should, maybe the chip will work a little better than before, as far as performance.
Ive heard others say that they basicaly use it for daily driving and then switch it out at the track, but have also heard of those raving about racing with it:confused: . I have no experience with their race chips (nor any race chip for that matter:rolleyes: ).
