There still seem to be some that believe organ donations are in some way tied to money. Other then the cost of the operation, it's not. Once you qualify to get on a waiting list, it's about Need, Tissue Matching, and Size. That's all.
There are very strict guidlines in place, and compared to the total number of hospitals around, very few are transplant centers. For a hospital to lose it's accreditation, would be extremely costly, and the Drs involved would seriously damage their careers. If I need remind anyone of the *Jessica Case*, where there were some lapses of judgment, and procecure, the costs were astounding.
And it's not just about Organs, there's alot of tissues that can be transplanted. And some of the tissues are used for curing Birth Defects. BD's are almost never mentioned anymore, but they still do exist, and some of the facial disfigurements are horrific. IMO, being able to donate the tissue to allow a child to have a relatively normal life, is well, just beyond words. Eyebrows, nose, ear, cartalage, are all items that can be used in facial reconstruction. And when it come to kids under the age of 7 normally reguardless of the transplantion, no immune system suppresent drugs are needed. The immune system takes years to develope, so being able to have the tissues, readily available is critical.
So while there is truth in the statement *Donors give the gift of Life*, there is also truth in the statement, *Donors give the gift of having a Normal Life*.
On another topic, some want to complain or make an issue of having to wait for a donor. Well the reason for having to wait is that there just aren't enough donors. I've known guys that were on the waiting list for less then a week, and I've know several that waited 3 years. Again, it was just about need, matching, and size. The Harvest teams just have X amount of time to get what they need and get from the donor to the host. They *Do whatever it takes*, reguardless of who the people are.
