D5 painted orange?

Why would my 48k miler '87 GN have the tourqe converter painted orange? I verified that it does have the D5 stamped in it.

The reason I ask is due to my 60' times have always been bad. 2.0-2.3 on slicks and Drag radials with a 6psi launch with no cracks in the headers, i just replaced them. So, I'm lead to believe that there is something up with TC.

Car pulls real hard after that first 60' to a 12.40 at 113.6.

Any suggestions as to why would be helpful.

Pts has a D5 that is painted orange, and it has a higher stall and lots of good parts. What turbo are you running, as the stall may be to high for it. HTH!

torque conv

I don't think any 12 in conv has too much stall for even a stk turbo. It aint stock being orange, someone might have got stuck with it before you? Stall may be lower than stock conv-it might be broken inside some way. My stock conv coughed years ago and wouldn't stall at all. I could pull 1.9 60fts on radials,1.8 on M&H's with stock conv and turbo. I think the conv may be bad/wrong or your turbo is too big(no sig!)
Let us know what happens.:)

The turbo is a TA-48, yes TA-48! Kind of odd. I guess I'm going to have to track down the origional owner and finding out what's up.

The feel of the stall is only 2200 RPM which is the stock stall rating I believe. I was just wondering if it common to have an orange colored stall after a rebuild or from stock.

I need to clean up my 60' to bring my ET closer to the MPH that I'm getting.

On a side note...

I have a '92 AWD turbo Talon and love it. Your going to have fun with AWD launches. I was driving to work this morning and pulled up next to a Monte SS and just had to put a little shame his way. There's nothing like it. I then pulled off to gas up and about 20 min later I saw him parking at construction site, when he got I I couldn't resist honking to get his attention. He just gave me a big smile a head nod.

Thanks for the reply.

stall

Never heard of a TA-48! If its like a 49 stk stall should be OK-evidentally you need more stall or a good conv. You don't have a tach or scan tool to see the RPM it will foot brake at? Sounds like you need Bruce's 9"lock up;) ;)

The TA-48 is close to stock. It has a high flow T3 exhaust wheel and a TA-49 type impeller. That's about the best I can describe it. I use to think it was a TA-49 then I had it rebuilt at Limeted Engineering and Scooter informed me that it was a TA-48.

Anyway it's an old style turbo, but great for the street. As far as the RPM goes I was just at Turbo Tunder III in Oregon this weekend and I had both Scanmaster and OTC hooked up to verify that I had a 2200RPM launch or close to it. I tried several approaches with 3-6PSI launches all with the same results, a 2.0 -2.2 60'.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the TC at this point.
