Are these guys slow or what I have done a few project and ever one gets held up by the painter... and body guy... The Shop I took my are to in has had my car longer then I had it. Its going on 6 mos and we are just get the 1st coats of primer on the back half of the car.... I paid the guy in full I even drive down ever weekend to sand the car down to bare metal just to try to keep the car move forward... When I dropped it off he told me 2 mos at the most.... I even bought all the paint primer plus paid what he was asking for the job... Let me say he has done a awesome job on the ttop rust repair
but that only took us 2 weekends and he didn't even work 2full days on the repair I was wondering it most of you guys have the same trouble with painters

Took me 3 months to get my engine back after being told 2 weeks.........I don't know what it is about the automobile industry but it just seems to be acceptable for guys to lie, over promise, under deliver and think it's OK......sorry to hear you are having the delay. I would threaten to go get my car and take it somewhere else, that's what I eventually had to do and my engine was done that weekend.

The thing a lot of people don't understand with the body shops is:
#1 Your car isn't the only car in the shop
#2 They don't make a whole lot of money off re painting cars like ours, or to put it better, they make more off of the little "bumper cover" jobs that should only take 2-3 days total.

The exception is obviously if they give you a time table, they should be able to stick to it. A lot of people drop the car off and think it's only going to take a week or two.

Exactly, honor the timetable quoted. I don't care if someone tells me up front, "Hey...it will take 6 months to do this" I would rather hear that and him get it done in 6 1/2 months than to hear "Hey, it will take 2 weeks" and then 2 weeks later you hear "Well, I really got busy, try back next week" and then next week hear "Well, I had a family member die and you know the funeral took a lot of time, try back in 2 weeks" and then 2 weeks later hear "Well, I had some unexpected business I had to do with a buddy of mine and then I got sick with the flu".............all of it BS no doubt. Just be up front and honest people!!!!!!!!!

Is this a paint shop or a friend of a friend of a friend that can paint? 6 months is unacceptable, but now you're stuck that if you put the screws to him he is going to give you a subpar finish, which I'm guessing he is going to do because he lacks a proper work ethic.

Expensive paintjobs are worth every penny, I wouldn't do a car like ours with laquer check for less than $3,500 plus cost of supplies, but even my procrastinating butt could get one done in 6 months. Good luck, I hope to have pics of my paint job by Tuesday, and I primed it 3 years ago, LOL.

One thing is to that if they do work for ins. companies they go first and it is now pi$$ on the one that paid in full.

"i paid the guy in full" The biggest mistake ever

PLUS they hooked you with the 2 week quote.

I read this on this board all the time “engine at shop 3 months or at body shop for 6 months” WTF is with this crap.
What’s with this ship is that you guys accept it, so now it’s the standard just like in construction projects.

A friend of mines had an extension done on his house.
While the work was getting done he moved out to a rental. He made it clear that the time line had to be met and he actually added 2 weeks over the date that the GC quoted to the contract. Anyway the project went over by 2 months so now he takes the GC to court for the extra 2 months rent (6000) that he had to pay for the rental. The judge looks up the “industry standard” for meeting dead lines for this type of work and tells my friend that he was actually lucky because the standard was 3 months late so the contractor was ahead of schedule.
I get the feeling that this is the same BS that the auto industry is following.

u could not have said it any better know alot of people like this!! and know one that is a complete joke!!!

This thread sounds familiar. I had my GN painted and my painter took about 4 months to finish it. I took him a few other cars and he always took forever.

I currently have a TR in for paint that's been there since June and an engine at the machine shop that's been there about 1.5 months. There's always an excuse as to why they're not finished.

I'm not in a huge rush as the paintshop acts a storage for me since I don't really have any more room for that car too. Besides, no one has gotten a penny of my money and I simply stop by every week or so since they're all close to home and check their progress.

The way I figure, no one really wants to do full paint anymore unless it's $10k or more. It's just not profitable like insurance work. SO, when I do get a body shop that wil do it and do it right, I cut them lots of slack and anticipate 6 months or more and if I get it sooner well then, lucky me. Last thing I want to do is alienate a local painter that will do a full paint. I want to make sure the door is open should I ever need to do another...

I just wanted to say that I work in the automotive industry and am familiar with both sides of this. Now I'm not defending the bodyshop, but sometimes there are circumstances beyond your control. Take for instance last Friday, a POS Chrysler came in that needed struts, first the parts were not available until yesterday, customer was fine with it. When I went to take it apart Monday morning the fun really started. First the strut pinch bolts both broke, so I popped the struts and cut the bolts with a cut off wheel so I could remove the struts to drill out the bolts. Four hours later the struts were out, literaly beat them with a five pound sledge and an air hammer for four hours straight! Then I had to try and remove the broken pieces of the bolts, would have been easier to replace the knuckles but the customer was on a limited budget. Another three hours and a drill, many broken drill bits and finally a torch to blow the bolts outs. Broke plenty of parts so I had to wait until today to finish. Two hour project turns into a two day job, and I only get paid for two hours! Not only am I pissed that I only get paid for two hours, but the customer had to wait two days.

yep they make all the money doing insurance jobs because thay charge for all parts and then slap a gallon of bondo on the car and get it out. ive seen a 70 some camaro, 64-66 mustang, and a 68 t bird at the maco place by me and theyve been there for a few months now, and sitting out side in the rain now freezing temps no cover no glass either. usually they do school buses and fed ex small trucks. and a few crash cars.

when i had my 89 formula i was rear ended by an old man. state farm told the shop it needed the pass qtr replaced. after 3 months i decided to just drop in and get an update. walked straight in shop up to my car and it had bondo from the door jam to the tailights and bumper. owner tells me that he told state farm it was repairable and they oked it. i was omly 18 at the time and had no idea about body work and how the law worked. i got screwed big time. after 6 mos get a call to pick it up. qtr has sanding scratchs and orange peel like you wouldn't believe anfd this guy tells me it's my fault for rushing them, and that's how it was going to be, i had to take. learned a lesson the hard way. never again though
