Can an optical drive run in a vertical position or will I have read/write issues ?

shouldn't have any issues. I have seen vertical CD drives on numerous computers without issue. I personally don't like it, just that's just because i think it is a bit cumbersome putting disks in the drive when it is vertical.

Make sure the disk tray has a to hold the disk sideways.

They also make slot-load drives also for vertical mount. For example apple Imacs are built with those (dvd/cd drive).
