Spent part of Thursday at Ken's shop; he was super nice as always about letting random people (me) walk in and hang out half of the day.

I took a few pictures that may be interesting; the TA block, Ken's car, a customer's twin turbo motor and a single turbo Ford street motor that J.R. Granatelli was dynoing are among them.

Ignore all of the jig pictures (whoops, that's fixture, Chuck Leeper will come along and tell me "jig" isn't PC ;) ). I'm going to make one to use Ken's thrust setup for my roller cam builds since I like it so much.

Nice pics Kendall! I'm sure every visit you make to Duttweiler's you get some new ideas for your race car and learn something from Kenny...... Is Kenny going to build a motor for a customer with that TA block?

Thanks for sharing those pics:)

Kendall, You can use the cam itself to locate the retainer plate. Machine the cam nose for a close fit to the plate. Drill and tap, then finish machining the cam.

Yes, that would work fine..I just thought I'd machine a jig for future use to save time. :)

Brick,

The TA block on the engine stand is to be assembled with the TA heads and a twin turbo setup. It's the same parts that were on an iron S2 block that cracked on the dyno a couple of months ago. It made 1180 HP with a modified stock intake and the TA heads so it should be interesting to see how it does with the new block. The HP numbers should be the same but this will be a good "workout" to prove the block's durability.

Sounds good Kendall and I agree that this will be a good way to prove the blocks durability.......

Thats my TA block sitting there ......:D you a spy Kendall ;)
great pics.

Kendall,

Thanks for the great information and pictures.
For those who did not know Kenny raced his Olds
at Sacramento's NHRA Points Race last weekend.
He was the number one qualifier and finished runner
up in the race. Not bad for only the second time out with
the combination. The car was in the 6s at over 200mph.
It weighs about 2395lbs with Kenny sitting at the helm.
He won the best engineered car at the race. After looking
at your pictures that is not hard to understand.

Thanks again for sharing!

Kendall, what's up with the head bolt holes in your pics of the TA block? I can't make out any threads (hole sides look smooth) and they appear to have something in them about 1/4-3/8" down from the deck? At least that's how deep the holes look. Do you remember noticing them?

Carl, I have looked at several of the blocks but I can't tell you where the thread starts from memory. Looking at at least this pic I can see threads starting after the chamfer maybe .2" down into the hole. It's funny how you can see stuff in the pictures you don't notice at the time.

I guess I was equally struck by how shallow the holes are. Aren't the stock block holes deeper than that? Anyway, thanks for the pics and info.

The red GN was sold to Ron Luman of Ohio several years ago.
He has gone in the 7.5s with it with a different motor, Iron Heads if I remember. It also has a Glide in it now. This information is a couple years old though!!!

You are right on the money, but Kenny D. just freshened up the motor and it should run in the 7.2s-7.3s Kenny always finds a little more! Ron is considering selling it if anybody is interested.

That is great to hear that ron is still running the car.
What would Ron want for the car turn key?

Carl - you have better eyes than I do. Aluminum blocks tend to use a different style head bolt than what you may be accustomed to seeing on steel blocks. As such, the threads are in a different depth in the bolt holes.

Kendall - What's up with the bosses to the right of the knock sensor boss and the one below the turbo oil drain boss? Are these for water or oil?

Those are for oil. They're basically a duplication of what's on the late S2 blocks, with an extra boss in the back.

I would bet they were placed there as an additional mount for a lower end ballistic restraint in the event you wanted to put a stock crank rods and pistons in it and tweak it until it tried to scatter parts on the shop floor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! would save time on the cleanup!
(I can laugh because it has happened to me!!!!!)

NO there has not been a gn in the 6s yet.
Duttweiler's Car that he sold to Ron Luman is the fastest.
Kenny went 7.2 @ 180 with it. If he had more time I am sure
it would have gone 6.9 with it. He went 6.8s with the same motor in a olds chassis 6.84 @ 204 if I rememeber correctley.
Bill Anderson once he gets all the bugs worked out should have a 6.8 ride. I for one can not wait to see bill kick some butt!!!
