Has anyone noticed if there was a shim on the pinion gear when they took there rear end apart? I have had three of them apart now and none of them had shims, but everyone I talk to says it has to have a shim. Thanks

I know where it goes. I was wondering if from the factory they were shimmed or not. The ones that I have seen did not have shims.

pinion bearing shims

Hi,
I had my 8.5 apart before, and there was no shim on mine either.I replaced it as such, with a new bearing, and did the torque test.It passed, so I did not feel the need to do the pinion depth test. Also, I replaced the carrier bearings, and put the shims in stock locations.Backlash was under .020, so I left that alone too. The result was a very smooth, quiet axle that has gone 10K since repair.I'm sure it's not dead nuts, but, at least at my hp level, it has fulfilled expectations. 8.5 axles are pretty tough, afterall.
