I am in the market for a house but I don't want to give up having a garage to work on my cars. To find a house with a garge large enough for a lift is extremly hard if not impossible over here and I don't want to spend the rest of my good years on my back anymore. What do you think of digging a pit in the garage. How large would you make it? Is it a good or bad idea? Any Input please positive or negative would be great and why?

Of course the pit will have a cement slab and cement walls(foundation). It will not be just a dirt hole

No pits please. How about a flat driveway that you could use one of those portable side lifts? They kind of look like a fork lift.

The portable lift is great in nice weather but what about the winter when most upgrades are done. I see it already. Me outside covered in snow. .

I know they have been banned for years around here. You can see in some old service bays the lines of the pit that have been filled with concrete. I don't know how some of the oil change places can use them but I'm sure there's massive fire safety equipment required.

Maybe it sounds crazy, but have you investigated the costs of having a roof raised on a garage? I'm also wondering about local ordinances regarding a lift on residential property.
