Have recently started having problems with "binding" on my 63000 mile 86 GN, with 20,000 since the synthetic fluid change. The car is rarely raced but driven hard when driven, isn't that why we have them ;^)

Noticed a periodic loud clunk that while turning during reverse that causes the car to jerk. Also clunks and jerks while turning during forward acceleration, like a locker. Doesn't do it all the time but getting more frequent.

It has been suggested to simply change the fluid, but I don't know. Any suggestions??

Bob.....................

I had that problem before I began using the car basically for racing and went with the blue Redline. All I did was put the standard grade fluid in and went to a GM dealer and ask for the posi additive. I believe that additive allows the clutches to slip smoothly when rounding corners etc. That stopped the clicking immediately. Larry

noise

I would have that baby on jack stands and the cover off. Some parts may be out of place (sounds like something loose in there , maybe a tooth off a gear).

If its that noticable Lee could be right on the money. The thought of that just makes me cringe! Larry

Add a couple of containers of the limited slip additive as previously mentioned and see if the noise goes away. The binding should stop, but if it doesn't, then start worrying about mechanical problems.

Since I have to pull the rear cover to change the lube anyway, will give it a thorough inspection. Acts like it loads up and releases. Was suggested to use straight Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube w/o the additive.

Thanks for the help, and assurance.

I had a similar problem with a 75 Electra W/Limted slip.
I had 2 clutch plates in the rear that were destroyed, I pieced together what I found in the bottom of the housing, and I was only able to find a plate and a half:eek: The ring and pinion ate the other half plate. It must not have been to hungry that day:D Fortunatley, it didnt ruin anything else, 'course that rear was a huge 9 3/8 rear, and I dont know what caused it, I replaced the clutches, and all was good for towing 6000 lbs again:cool: Mark
