I have a PowerTrax locking differential for that non-posi differential that came in many TR's. It is the stock 28 spline unit sold in Jegs for $470. See the link below. Works great and is definitely the low cost way to get some performance out of your open differential. If you can change spark plugs, you can do this. The gears are NOT disturbed so it is simple. I have the installation directions.

$325 shipped to lower 48 states.

I just looked at Powertrax's web site and they list GM 8.5" with no breakdown for the year. The site indicates it will fit a 8.5" GM open rear end with 28 spline axles. I have no first-hand knowledge on a 70's Buick rearend so I cannot guarantee anything. Worst that can happen is you buy it and if it doesn't fit, you can re-sell it here or on ebay. I'll go $300 shipped to lower 48 states if you are interested.

Doesn't anyone want to get rid of their peg-leg differential? This unit doesn't require that the gears be disturbed so most anyone could do the install!

Conrad, I'm just waiting on my mechanic to give me the thumbs up or down before I make a deal.

Thanks for the update. I will hold it for you for a couple of days. Please let me know one way or the other.

I run one of these in my Regal. There is only one click when going around corners. It's held up well so far, I've had it installed for 2 years. I'd reccommend it as cheap and easy to install alternative to posi.

Installed and Working Well

I purchased this PowerTrax unit and installed it today.

It works.

I drove the car around for an hour including the tightest turns left and right with no noise, no clicks or clunks.

The inside tire chirps when I apply above average power at the beginning or the middle of a turn. That seems normal to me. The unit is quiet cruising through a turn.

Installation took about 3 hours in my garage as I took my time carefully following the directions, wrestling with the axles and a stubborn filler plug. I'm sure one could do better with a lift instead of doing the work on jack stands as I did.

Paul,
I am glad it worked out for you. Now give those pesky 'Stangs and "Maro's a spanking!! Enjoy!

Friendly advice on these units, I've had 2. Avoid wheel hop at all costs. Wheel hop will kill one of these in short order. Since its a ratcheting differential it can't engage and disengage fast enough under wheel hop and will eventually wear the teeth down to where it will start freewheeling under hard accceleration. So if your car likes to wheel hop at all I'd get that staightened out very soon.

Thanks for the advice.
