Hey guys i have a line on a 84 t type for about $ 2000. The only problem is i want to run 11's. Should i just save up for an 86/87 or just grab the 84 and go to work.

2 grand is a good deal if it's in good shape, but you'll have a lot into it as far as parts goes before it's all said and done though. IMHO it depends on if you want something to drive around now and add parts as you get money or if you wanna just plunk down a pile of cash and be done with it. I'd add up the cost of the parts you're gonna use (base it on other people's combos) that are added to the hot air and not to the 86-87 cars, if the car+the extra parts are cheaper then an intercooled car, go for it. The second thing to consider is if you're any good at building stuff and mechanic's work. IMHO a lot of the mods (the new intake manifolds for instance) require a lot more work as far as making things go, and a lot of the aftermarket stuff isn't there that there is for the intercooled cars.

I totally agree with the previous post. I have a beautiful 85 GN which will perform the same as an 87 stock. The amount of money spent would have been better spent on the 86/87 setup. I made the decision to buy my 85 GN based on the quality of the body and interior. I have a nice body and interior but the hot airs are limited. I chose to go with the 85GN with an excellent body and interior. If you are looking for pure power, don't waste your time on a hot air. Brad

Thanks Brad, i really appreciate your input. I'm glad you spoke up and it really helps that you own a hot air car. My next question is how about if i put an intercooler kit on it, would that help or not.

hotair 4 ever
a 11 sec hotair car deserves way more respect than a i/c car
because it takes more work to acheive
just my 2 cents :D

It all depends on the size of your wallet. The best place to look for the recipe for improving a hot air is on the GNTTYPE.ORG website. They have two very good recipes to explore and they work. I decided to not put on an intercooler because of the cost vs. performance gains as well as staying hot-air. I saw large performance boosts by replacing the headers, exhaust, fuel pump, hot wire kit, test pipe, 30ibs inj., high flow exhaust and computer chip. Research and post on this website and GNTTYPE.ORGY about hot air intercoolers. Your goal of getting into the 11s with a hot air is achievable but it harder and more expensive. I do not drag race and my car gets up and goes as well as smoking the tires which is why I will not intercool my car. The cost and look do not justify the performance increase in my case. Good luck- Brad

I own a 84 ttype and my brother own's a 87gn and a 89 tta so I know hot air and intercooled cars first hand. If you want to go fast get a intercooled car. They are at least a full second faster to start with and more parts available. Much easier.

Tim- You are correct- my modified 85 GN will equal a stock 86/87. The 86/87 is alot easier to modify in order to get into the 11"s. Brad

I have the hot air fever...when I am finished....the only non stock looking thingy under the hood will be the DP, and the nice detail paint...other than that....NO IC...11.50 or lower is my goal, and once I hit that, my car is done with the modding, and I go for an IC car to beat on....

If you want an IC, get an 86-87 GN, and put a few $$ into it for the 11's. If you are looking for a challenge, get the hot air. IMO, they cost mostly the same in the end.....meaning:

2000 for hot air car, 5000 for IC car in simular/comparable shape
around 6000 in mods for 11's in hot air car, around 2000, maybe a little less for the IC car to go 11's.

Concept: How much wrench time? I am starting from scratch with a fresh .030 block, and a total roller set-up, a whole slew of bolt-ons, and a beefy trans and converter....for the IC cars, the regular bolt-ons, a little spray, and good tuning with a chip and you have the same goals. It is all a matter of how handy or creative you wanna be.

Just ask Lee Thompson!!! He created his own Down Pipe for cryin out loud!!!! lol. My 2 cents, anybody feel free to correct me if I am wrong or off in my guesstimates!

John
