Power antenna install???

Looking at changing the power antenna assembly .What is the best way to re and re??Any and all pointers woild be appreciated

I just did my power antenna a few months ago. I covered the front of the passenger door and fender with thick duct tape. Remove the 10 mm bolts from inside the door jamb just in front of the door. There is one bolt that is silver with a star washer, remove this last, this holds the power antenna in.

Next remove the 10 mm bolts inside the fender well above the passenger side tire. These bolts hold the fender to the inner fender. Under the hood unplug the power wire and antenna wire and attach mechanics wire to them so they can be pulled back up through during reassembly.

Pull the rear bottom of the fender out so that you can reach up inside and pull the antenna out. Remove the silver 10mm bolt in the door jamb and loosen the nut on top of the fender where the antenna comes out. It helps to have a second set of hands to hold the antenna and guide it out when you remove the top nut.

Hi Kevin...I replaced my antenna two years ago and there's no other way than to unbolt the fender to gain access to the electric motor. Be sure to put some masking tape on both the fender and door edges to prevent scratching them. The motor comes out from the bottom with the bracket. There are two wires to disconnect if I remember, one is the power wire for the motor and the other (bigger one) is sending the signal to the radio...

If you have a GN that will work, but if you have a GNX the process is much different, as I removed mine last week. The GNX way the antenna comes thorugh the inner fender and out the hole near the battery.

You didn't mention once you remove the old one are you going to replace with a brand new, rebuilt, or another power antenna type?
Either case you might want to electrically hook it up before assembling inside the fender, and then finding out the antenna won't go up or down.

Thanks,how do you time it ,looks like some tension is needed to make contacts touch and motor to engage.I tried with antenna fully extended and it will not work.Any further info or pics is appreciated.

Kevin, What do you mean by time, and tension?
If you remove the whole antenna from the fender, take a voltage test leads with one end that has an alligator clamp to the battery + post and the other end that has an alligator clamp to the battery - post, then connect them to wiring diagram on second page lowering right side of the PDF file I already sent you. If the motor don't run then replace the whole antenna, if the motor runs but no movement from the mast then replace the nylon cable.

Oh and don't forget to hook up the antenna lead before you rebolt up the fender. Ask me how I know...
