Does anyone know of a GM or NAPA part number for a rebuild kit for an 86/87 style pump? I think the pump is no longer available from GM but I can get it at other places........I would rather rebuild my own GM pump instead of buying some foreign POS.........Thanks for the help

Just rebuilt one but did not write the number down. I got with my local parts store, who sells rebuit pumps. Asked him to call the company that they get the pumps from and ask for a rebuild kit.
That is how I found it.

how difficult was it to rebuild??
do you need any special tools??
mines works good its just leaking fluid by the pump shaft, can that seal alone be replaced with out it being a major project?

Yes i now its an old thread:(

I've done just the front seal, was on a '85 Regal with the NA 3.8 engine. Will need the proper pulley puller along with a push-it-back-on tool. The push-on tool can be a bolt, nut and some flat washers. The inside of the shaft is threaded, put nut on bolt, washers, oil them, then thread into shaft. Use nut to push the pulley back on.

To get the seal out use a sharp tool to pierce it then pry it out. Oil on new seal and a deep well socket to seat it (carefully).

When I did it only the pump was unbolted from the engine. Left the lines intact to keep the fluid in the system. It wasn't as difficult as I expected with the pump still connected to the lines. If the P/S pump is on teh stock location odds are it will need to be removed to access the front seal.

A full rebuild is really just replacing all of the seals. Besides the front seal, it is usually the body to can seal (o-ring) that starts to leak. But our '86-'87 Turbo cars don't have the can. Although this means that there are more internal o-rings to prevent leaking.

Thanks for the reply
I only want to replace the seal on shaft as the pump works good. I do have a power steering puller set.

Concerning 1986-1987 turbo regal power steering pumps. we just now located a source and have them in stock rebuilt our part # 7378 price is $124.95 plus $25 refundable core charge.

This was a difficult part for us to find....we also now have steering boxes in stock also which was part of that unique FE3 suspension package.

Each pump is pre tested. I don't think any other car used this pump which makes them difficult to find today. Also I think it actually spins the opposite direction......

Im sure cardone rebuilds them. You can do the seal right on the car if you have a front mount. Make sure the shaft is cleaned with emery cloth before removing the seal. If not when new seal is pushed on the rust on shaft will ruin new seal. fush the system real good before and after seal replacement. Metal flakes in fluid will damage seal after time. Also installing a filter on return line wont hurt either
