A friend has an 87 TR and he says sometimes he gets the red light on the dash for over heating. It is a digital dash. If he pops the hood and jiggles the resisiter on the fan, then the fan comes on and all is well. Is that resistor known to go bad or is it just a loose wire? I told him when we remove the stock intercooler to clean it, we will have more room to examine the connections. Any advice for us would be appreciated.

I'd check the relay on the fender and pull the fan assembly for inspection (corrosion) and continuity testing. like you said once the IC is out you will have good access.
