PS axle has lateral movement?

I was just remounting new tires and I noticed that I can push in and pull out the passenger side axle maybe a 1/4". The drivers side has no movement whatsoever. What would allow lateral movement of the passenger side axle in the tube?

free play between the end of the axle and the center pin in the differential. some play is normal- but anything more than about 1/16" means that something is getting worn out. time to pull the cover and see what's going on.

I will pull the cover and take a look. Will there be shims that I can add to take out the free play?

nope.. no shims. the end of the axle shaft rides against the pin.. the c clips go in, the axles are slid out until the clip bottoms out in the spider gear, and the pin is inserted to keep everything together and tight.
