I haven't had much luck in my other thread regarding this, so here goes- When you start the car after sitting for a day or more, how long does it take for the oil pressure to come up? Mine takes 1-2 seconds, kinda makes me nervous. It doesn't clatter or make noise, but it should come up faster, I think. I've been unplugging the ecm and cranking till it comes up, but that is a pain. I'm using 10w40 now, and a mobil 1 oil filter. I think maybe the lines drain back due to the fact that the filter sits higher than the block, and they have to refill. Ideas?

Make sure your using a filter with a anti drain-back valve in it. Do you have an oil press gauge or just the dash light?? Is your oil synthetic??? Try a 10-30 oil as well instead of the 10-40

My car builds Oil Pressure pretty fast. Even if it sits for 2 days or so. If it sits for a long time without being started (like a week or so), then I disconnect the fuel pump and crank it over until I see the oil pressure gauge needle move. Then I plug the pump in and start it. Better to take a minute of my time then start the car with dry bearings. HTH's

By the way, I use a Valvoline VA56 oil filter which has a built in anti-drainback valve. It prevents the filter from draining oil back into the crankcase and stays full so when you start the car, the oil filter doesnt have to fill with oil before it goes to your engine's bearings (because its already filled).

Anti drainback valves aren't necessary on vertical oil filters. They can't drain up, but maybe the lines can?

i use a pre-luber which pumps up the oil pressure to 55 lbs with the key in the on position before you start the motor which means no more dry starts.

I run a Turbo Saver set up but i still run a Baldwin filter. Well worth it after seeing one cut open :) Mine takes 1-2 seconds for it to show on the guage, and the guage is the last place to see oil so thats ok in my book.

Are you using a mechanical or electric oil pressure gauge? If it's mechanical, possibly something is wrong with the feed line? I've got a mechanical on mine and it'll show oil pressure quickly after startup. Never been an issue with me.

Good luck,
-Banning.

Its an electric gauge, vdo I believe. I would like more info on that preluber setup, if you don't mind.

Mine comes up pretty much instantly. 1-2 seconds? Maybe - never checked. If mine sits a while it does clatter when I first start it. It's done that ever since the rebuild. It will clatter for maybe half a second. Not sure if I should worry about it. Seems fine otherwise.

And, like someone else said, an anti-drainback valve isn't necessary if the filter is mounted vertically. The oil can't drain up out of the filter (unless you park upside down, but then you'd have bigger problems than oil pressure).

I have one and don't get clatter even after sitting for a month or so! I use a Delco UPF-1218 Duraguard Gold filter but they are discon now. I will probably go with a Baldwin filter next after my Delco ones are gone.

I use a VDO cockpit electric guage and the guage is slower to respond to oil pressure than the engine is to get it. The newer type ones(with the large screw-on retainer ring in the back) have a slower damper device inside them so they react and read slower than they used to.

Unless you have lots of start up rattle or clatter I wouldn't worry about it.

I have one as well. I have a mechanical autometer guage, and a heck of alot of line running to it also. when i get in it to crank it, i turn it over about 10 seconds and then flip the fuel pump on and let it crank. its cold out in the mornings, so the oil is thicker and will take longer to flow. i run 15-50 mobil 1. I run a pure one filter as well, biggest that fits. once i start it the needle jumps after about 1 to 2 seconds, just like yours, and then climbs on up to around 85 psi or so. it isnt instant 85 psi, i wish it would climb instantly, but it goes up kinda slow, takes about 5 seconds to get full oil pressure. Again, its cold outside during this time of year and the oil is thicker and will take longer. Like banning said, it may be a problem with the oil line to the guage, or something. The engine does get oil before the guage. When i start mine up, after its been sitting a long time, it will clatter for about half a second as well, unless i turn it over without fuel for a while to let pressure build, then it wont clatter. I dont see this as a problem, more of a nuisance. Im pretty sure its just a lifter, the lifters leak down after they sit and lose their pressure, and when i crank it up, it takes a sec for them (it) to pump back up and eliminate the clearance in the valvetrain. Thats all it is. its done it ever since ive had it, and ive seen alot of them that do it. it seems common to me

Here is what I have seen FWIW.
The bigger the line to the gauge the better the responce to change in oil pressure. Cold oil in small line equals s l o w e r responce.
