So I'm cruising in the T-type with a buddy to go fly some R/C planes when I see a CHP car pull out from a strip mall on this road I am on.
I'm doing 35 mph, the speed limit, so I'm not worried about anything.
We hit a light and he is in the lane next to mine and decides to stop at around my rear quarter panel even though he can pull up even with me. I thought it was a little odd but since I wasn't doing anything wrong I figured I had nothing to fear.
As we are sitting at the light, this POS 4 banger mustang decides to squeel its rear right tire when the light goes green. My buddy and I start laughing that this guy was about to get popped by the cop.
We start rolling forward and the cop switches lanes to be behind me. He turns on his lights, I figure he wants to get to the car in front of me. I pull to the right lane and he follows. WTF? I think to myself. So I pull over.
He walks up to the car and tells me he pulled me over because my rear tires are bald. At this point I wanted to tell him that that is the way they look from the factory because they are DOT legal drag radials (MT ET radials) But I have learned that speaking to police officers in other than yes/no answers only leads to more harassment.
He then tells me that I have to register my car in California and get a California drivers license since I am no longer active duty military. I nod and say ok while in my mind thinking over my dead body will I do that.
He goes back to his car and cites me for no cali lic. no cali registration, and "bald" rear tires. He then pulls me out of the car to look at how clearly bald my rear tires are. I was tempted to ask him what the tread limit was specifically in inches but I decided that would be a bad decision. Seeing as how he did not measure, I don't think measurement limits would have mattered. I was also admittedly down to the wear bars and figured I would just look up the limits later.
I looked up the code that he cited me for in ref. to the rear tires and found that the minimum tread depth is 2/32'nds of an inch
I measured my tires at 3/32nds of an inch at their shallowest point.
He told me to "fix" the problems and go to the CHP station to have an officer sign it off.
If I was rich I would roll up with the car exactly as it sits and have them come out and measure the drag radials. Unfortunately, I think that that may be asking for trouble.
Anyway, I had to vent. The more I think about this the more pissed off I am seeing as how #1, a guy peeled out from the light right in front of us, #2 I am a law abiding citizen not bothering anyone. #3, he didn't even measure my tread depth and just assumed that there must be more tread pattern to the tires that was gone.
