I have been thinking about the styles of transmission pumps that have been used over the years, primarily the older Geroter style, and the "new kid on the block" the Vane type. I am a tad older than a number of the people in the arena, and the majority of transmissions that I worked on over those years had pumps of the geroter type. These pumps worked very well, and some transmissions had 2 of them, a front AND a rear, and these vehicles could be push started.
There are a number of reasons as to why the engineers went this way, from the standpoint of cost, output, reliability
(the geroter were pretty reliable when clearances were correct). I have my own ideas as to why the industry went to vane type pumps but I am curious if others have thought about this as well, especially from chris and others that have a business of building the 4 speed automatics. I am curious about your opinion. I also admit that I do miss the geroter style.
