Hey guys, I am used to using the biggie Mobil1 filter and the purlator L20033. I found a l30055 on the shelf at pepboys and going to give it a try. Anyone had problems with this model filter?> Yes I have my bypass blocked,

thanks,
Ralph

I have used the L30005 not the L30055. I just purchased the AC Delco UPF 24s (Gold series) which are discontinued from the parts for sale section.

The Purolator L30005 is indeed about 20% longer than the Delco PF24 commonly used with the RJC "Biggie" filter adapter.

I personally prefer the Baldwin B9, same super large size but a structurally more rugged filter.

Baldwins have had a very consistent anti-drainback valve (ADV) in my experience, PLUS the metal shell is much stronger and stiffer than normal "retail" flters like Purolator.

All these filters are threaded 13/16"-16 for use with the RJC adapter.

In emails I exchanged with Baldwin, the B9 is rated:
100 psi operating, 200 psi typical burst, 250 ºF operating.

I a an idiot, I meant tnhe l30005. I would get the B9 but such a PIA to find a retailer near me. Any of the 30005 internally collapse on you yet? I collapsed a fram and mobil and nappa. I never collapsed a purolator or a amzoil. I am hoping this larger filter will help even more against collapsing..

thanks,
Ralph

Is it only the bypass you have intentionally plugged, or do you have other modifications?

eg, High Volume plus High Pressure oil pump?
What oil weight are you using?
Are you waiting for oil to reach normal operating temp before any hard throttle?

I am thinking of taking an RJC Biggie adapter (13/16"-16) thread and re-threading it to 3/4"-16. This will allow use of super-strong racing filters, eg Baldwin B253 or its Wix equivalent. They have the same gasket size as the stock filters.

The B253 is rated 300 psi operating, 600 psi typ burst, and has a 20 psi internal bypass (stock bypass is 7-8 psi, I'm told).

I jsut have the bypass blocked with stock oil pump and gears. I use 20w x 50 with some lucas in it. The highets it gets when it is cold is 75 psi then it drops to 30 psi when hot. I let the car idle until it gets down to 50 psi and then I drive with no boost until it gets hot. If baldwin is rated at such a high psi why are some peple collapsing them inside? This what i dont get. i like the idea of rethreading the biggie filter dapter. I would go for that to. But will the bigger race filters def take the 75 psi??

thanks,
Ralph

30 psi @ idle with oil fully warmed up seems awfully high ... any particular reason you're running 20-50 oil, as opposed to say 10-30 or 5-30 ??

I hadn't really read reports of collapsed Bladwin filters here, but I'm sure it could happen with cold, thick oil under heavy throttle.

The "burst" pressure previously cited is just for the exterior case, filter media collapse is going to be created by "excessive" pressure drop ACROSS the filter media ... I don't have the "flow vs pressure drop" data for the media available.

This is where a filter with a built-in internal "racing" bypass (20 psi) might be helpful, for people running a plugged stock bypass. The stiff 20 psi racing bypass would probably NOT open under normal hot conditions, unlike the stock bypass. Yet the racing bypass would perhaps prevent filter collapse when the engine is still warming up.

The baldwin B253 is one such racing filter, Wix has an equivalent that is sold at http://www.bakerprecision.com/ (among otehrs), but their site is down right now. NOTE: these racing filters would require a modified RJC adpater, as cited.

My engine builder told me to use 20x 50, it is a pain but he is the man I listen to. it kind of fluctuates at idle, some days it is 25 some days it is 30. Thats becuase either the gauge isnt all that accurate or the temp of the oil. So thats the story. But like I said I never had a purolator L20055 break on me ever. I found a L30005 and decided to try it, didnt put it on yet. I jsut worry to much about the filter collapsing. The only 2 filters that never collapsed on me are the Amzoil and Purolator. Maybe I will jsut stick with these two and see hwo it goes.

thanks for you help.
