My Turbo T has a 200r4 with a stage 1 kit done do to it , what causes it to go in lockup fine one time and then the next time it will jar your teeth , its seems to be fine if you are in a good pull shifting to accelerate , but if you accelerate slowly is when it will jar you . TV is adjusted right and moving it did not help . any ideas or is that normal ?

There is a check ball captured in the input that I believe.if it is omitted causes lockup to apply much more abruptly. Maybe one of the knowledgeable will confirm or deny that.

What converter are you running? Any work done on the tranny?

I've got an Extreme Automatics 200-4R Stage II that Lonnie converted back to lock up for me while it was in his shop for a rebuild.
In the process he left out the check ball at the end of the input shaft.
This the check ball is installed from the factory for the lock up D5 converter , however it is removed when going to a non lock up. He suggested leaving it out & explained that there will be less slipping / clutch wear during shifts with this check ball removed. Albeit the shift will feel like it has a lot more authority.
I'm not finding anything too abrupt when mine shifts through the gears.

if its a multi disc lockup put the check ball capsule back in it slows down the oil coming out of converter so threrefore your slowing down apply pressure

Not meaning to hijack this thread but this raises a question. Can those of us that have the old 7 disk vigilante that always stalls the engine when shifting into gear (cold-warm), will putting that check ball back in solve the stalling issue?

How can I tell if I have a multi disc lockup converter , this car is box stock no mods but the tranny has been built to Stage ! specs as I talked to the man that built it but it been so long ago he did not remember what converter it had . are they some numbers I can get off of it and tell ? The converter stalls to 2200 at 0 boost , so I would think it is stock LU . will a shift kit make it shift firmer in LU than standard kit .

My 5 disc Vig eventually just stopped doing that stall issue.
