Question about the rod coming from the steering column to the transmission?

If you disconnect this will it affect anything other than your back up lights? I have a hurst lighting rod shifter in my car and notice that it operates better with this not hooked up?

Yes, the rod activates the mechanical P/N safety interlock (ign key), the P/N input to the ECM (idle speed and DFCO control), and of course the back up lights.
