He just finished his new combo:

350 ZZ4 crate motor 350hp/405tq
400 trans
373 posi
255/60/15 on the back

Do I have what it takes to whoop him?

stock block, ATR exhuast, test pipe, cold air intake, SMC alky, boost at 22, zero knock on a JC 93 chip.

He seemed really impressed when from a stop I laid a patch of rubber about 100 feet long :-)

As long as you get some traction you shouldn't have a problem taking care of him.:D

well.... that is the big problem these days.

If I nail it from a dead stop with no boost built (idling) about half way through 1st it breaks loose......

If I am not so heavily on the gas in 1st it still breaks loose on the 1-2 shift and the 2-3.

I have wonderful 235/60/15 BFG Radial TA's

Anyone have a set of DR's to loan for a weekend?

:-)

Depending on traction (on both sides), you're going to have some trouble. I don't know why everybody thinks it's such an easy win. 405ft lbs of torque is nothing to take lightly. Just because it's not a turbo Regal, doesn't automatically make it slower.

My thoughts exactly which is why I posted in the first place :-)

Given my mostly stock combo any idea how my hp and tq compare at the flywheel to his?

U both sound like 13 second cars.

373's may get him out a bit quicker But you may have better mid-range.

Sounds like it will all come down to traction & ability to control it.

Keep us posted

That's the numbers rated at the crank, which would be what 325 or so rwtq. that's what a stock GN puts out. I watched a show that tested all the big dog crate motors and the chevy 454 put out a big 335 hp the ford and dodges weren't all that much better at a little over 400 hp.

I'll give you the results from a comparably equipped Monte SS.

1984 Monte SS (White w/blue buckets)
ZZ4 crate motor using the 305HO computer carb & ECM
emissions-legal headers (the ones with the AIR tubes)
TH350C (lockup)
GN 8.5 posi rear w/ 3.42's (stock 7.5 would have been toast long ago)

On the stock-size Goodyear Eagle #1 (the yellow-letter ones), the car went 13.1 @ 106 with a 2.0 short time. Getting the car out of the hole was the hardest part because he was right on the edge of traction. I'm certain with better tires it's a 12.8-12.9 car. If you opened the hood it looked like the stock motor sitting in there, with the exception of the '84 Z28 HO dual-snorkel ram-air.

Yeah dont count the monte out. We all want the buick to win every time but that is not always the case. a strong 350 is a dam good street engine. and like the the man is saying it can look stock and be stock or look stock and be 400+ hp easy
it can look built and just have shiney chrome with no ass or be all out crazy.

I had a 87 SS monte with a 406 roller motor and there sure was alot of people who missed it the first time they looked. if you did not look at the balencer and things of that sort that most don't know of you can be fooled. I was asked tons of time where i hid the nitrous on it ( a few high 11 sec passes will get attention) I just laughed.

I see no big downpipe on your TR list, I'd think your chances were better if you had one...

Also, how"built" was the crate motor, shortblock, longblock...Injection or carbed? Intake port matched? Headers? Exhaust?

Bottom line, I'd say the cars 'theoretically' should be a dead heat, but I'm thinking he'll be hard pressed to get 350 hp "out of the box", he'll probably need some substantial tweaking at least...

Just do the race & let us know.

Inquiring minds want to know..

hopefully you are not laying down $$?

What I'd be worried about.....
If he knows how to drive his car, I think he's going to win. I personally thought my Monte Carlo was easier to launch than my Buick (the Monte had 572lb ft of torque). It seemed to be much easier to recover from a "bad" launch than the Buick is. I don't know how much lag you have (probably little to none if it's a stock turbo), but that seems to be the down point to mine if I spin off the line. Good luck. Too bad the track is closed, I could have watched.

In his words "this is my first performance car" so he is right where I am.

I was trying to show off by laying rubber all the way down the road and we almost ended up in the ditch!!! :-)

Neither of us know how to handle our cars so provided we don't run into each other on the launch....it should be fun.

I hope to have another friend there to video.

Well......

Taking a break to put a coat on now - 41 degrees right now.

We ran a few times twice for a stop and once from about 30 mph.

From a roll the Buick wins each time.

From a stop we are both having traction problems but when I hook..... I dive on past, although not very quickly.

We are pretty evenly matched but the Buick has so far proven to be the stronger.

We are off to find another spot to try some more.

Stay tuned.
