At least you guys have a GINORMOUS radiator to keep your cool, even if it is an autozone unit.

have any idea how hard it is to keep a V6 cool on a 17 X 19 rad?

I'd like to see some "experts" real opinions on the value of liquid to liqiud heat exchangers compared to liquid to air. liquid to liquid is something around 8 times more efficient than air per square inch. And if you keep the coolant temp in check, that's a lot of cooling capacity without having to buy decent coolers and find room for them.

you're probably the same guy that buys the $20 parts store tranny cooler and runs it by itself with a high stall converter. got news for you, my pts rad has more tranny cooling ability than the vast majority of aux. tranny coolers. and if you spend the money for good coolers you are approaching the cost of a good radiator.

I like to think Don Wang is an expert on the subject of transmissions. Here's what he said about the aux trans cooler.

When running an aux cooler with the internal radiator cooler, I recommend mounting the cooler in the grill area. Behind a f/m intercooler is fine. The intercooler is not going to be hot all the time. Only under boost conditions, which shouldn't be for very long stretches.
I don't believe in mounting the cooler flat, out of the air stream and relying on a fan to take the place of the power of having the cooler in the direct airstream.

Another simple test. Pick whatever fan you wish. Put your hand in the airstream of that fan and note the power of the airflow. Now jump in the car and take a drive on the freeway. Lower the driver's window and put your hand out the window flat to the airstream. You'll be amazed.

I didn't find any info on the engine oil cooler.

Also, I would guess the aluminum rad would weigh less, not sure though.

Speaking of Don Wang, here is another one of his posts from a previous thread:

Water is 14 times more efficient at transferring heat than air. The size of the trans cooler in the radiator is tiny compared to an external air to liquid unit. Yet, it is able to keep most, if not all, OEM applications within proper operating temperature. Ask any aftermarket manufacturer of an external air to liquid cooler if they would recommend eliminating the cooler in the radiator. They won't.

I have fought with countless people through the years that thought they had a better idea for cooling their transmission and yet they were at my shop wondering why their trans was getting hot. They would foo foo my suggestion and keep coming around the shop with their newest system for cooling the trans. But still it was getting hot. Years later I would see them again and ask about their cooling system. They would tell me that after they burned up a trans they did what I told them and things were great. Most people just have to learn on their own.

Ford once put external air to liquid coolers on a model of their trucks, eliminating the cooler in the radiator. Guess what happened. Needless to say, that idea was gone the next model year and kits were made available to upgrade the mistake design to the traditional cooler in the radiator and external cooler.

I will also add that nothing beats having an auxiliary cooler in the front grill area, in the airstream. Not hidden under the body, flat, with a fan on it. I had a fella that had this super duper system. Three auxiliary coolers and a fan on one of them. He complained about his trans temp. I told him to run one in the airstream behind the grill. He was like everyone else and resisted my advise for years. He came by the shop one day to proclaim that my suggestion was right. He finally did what I told him.

Yeah, us old transmission guys don't know a thing.
