Anyone into RC Cars? I'm looking to purchase an entry level car for my son's birthday. Any suggestions on what to purchase ? I am looking for something durable and low maintenance.

Alot depends on his age.
Electric would be better for a younger boy, eventually they will graduate to gas as they get older.

I bought a RTR Traxsass for my son when he started out.

Find a local track and go there some saturday and watch some off folks running thier cars.. You will find both Young & old & even some girls.

I used to be big into nitro rc's. Now they just sit collecting dust in the basement. I honestly just got sick of fixing something that i broke on it the day before. Plus the fact of constantly having to mess with the tune up on it depending on the weather made it more of a hassle. I'd suggest an electric rc for a beginner. Possibly something like the E-Revo or E maxx trucks. They will take alot more abuse than the small framed car setups and won't flip and break into a million pieces if you run over the smallest pebble in the road.

This was my jato 3.3 that i had up to 65mph. I love the thing but its more tempermental than my buick.

i'm into rc cars like crazy. how old is he? best would be a electric to start. i would IMOP stay far away from traxxas. Go associated or losi. I have all associated stuff myself.

Just to give you one reason why not to go with traxxas. So i was at the hobby store looking for parts for my brand new RC8T when they first came out. he didn't have it in stock. Well i started asking some questions about parts and why they have so many traxxas parts on the shelf. he says "we sale traxxas parts 15 to 1 on team assocaited parts" i asked why is that, he says " we sale about the same # of traxxas as we do associated but traxxas always brakes, so we get more customers for there parts. We sale alot of assocaited stuff and they don't come back often at all".

do you research. I would get a RC10T4 if he likes trucks or get a RC10B4 if he likes buggy's. This is the cheaper of the cars since they are 2 wheel drive. now if you get the RC10B44 it will be better vehicle at the track because its 4 wheel drive, but it will also cost you more. I would start him with a T4 and see if he likes it. O almost forgot about the SC10, those things rip at the track and alot of people have them. i always wanted to try one out.

anyways do some reasearch. you can get a cheap RTR kit with some nimh battery's (10 bucks, 15 min run time avg.) at first with a cheap charger ($35 15min charger). get about 3 battery and your good to go. have fun and see what he likes. if you need more help i can talk to you on the phone and give you all the info you might need. if you want send me a pm and you can call me.

o here is 2 links to me jumping my MGT 8.0 for the hell of it. WOT as fast as it would go. not the best ramp as the truck would bottom out as soon as it would hit the ramp but it was fun

Hey all the pics are nice. But to have lots of option you can check it online. You will have lots of varitey with resonable price.

hello people; I was into the RC for years and have been out of it for years. I did from 1/12 to a 1/5 scale gas and electric. What I would do if I were you is to go down to your local track and see what interests you and asked questions. See what the fast guys or gals ran and go from there. I liked 1/12 on road electric and !/8 scale gas on road. And when you do get the set up right it's all worth it.
good luck

PS; From there I did go Karts. Your kid might like that too.

Thanks guys, he is only eight years old so I am going with something electric. There are no tracks or hobby stores in my area so I will be researching and purchasing online.

hello people; Cork; I had good luck with Tower Hobbies. They do everything in RC. They should still be around. Also pick up the mag. RC car action and in there I use to find some deals.

Same thing here....saw Joe and Mike with some RC cars on HPTV...think they were nitro cars....anyways I want to get into it but don't know where to start.

hello people; If you (I think) want to see the ultimate in RC. Punch up RC helicopters and on it there's a guy with a forign name that can do more things with that heli you'd be amazed.

PS you tube insane RC helicopter Alan Azabo Jr.

TRAXXAS 4-Tec Great entry level car and ready to run. Bought two of these a few years ago and they are ready to go out of the box. All wheel drive and they go pretty good. The ones I bought came complete with radio. Plenty of parts to modify them with too, just wish I could find a Regal body for them. These are NOT like the junk you would buy at Walmart.

I used to off road race years ago and then got into the on road cars back when there was a killer track in Plainville CT. Was starting to spend as much on the little cars as the big ones so eventually sold out everything I had. :frown:

I was into them huge for many years, but it got wayyyy too expensive. Most of that was because of racing them. If you want to compete in the racing scene with these things, you need to have the latest & greatest of everthing.
It was fun, but my wallet couldn't handle it after about 5 years of it.:frown:

I still have a Nitro Monster Truck (MGT 8.0) to screw around with in the yard.

Anyhow, look into an RTR (ready to run) kit from a good company. As Boost231 said, Team Associated or Losi are considered the best in the biz. I couldn't agree with him more. Yes there are cheaper, but that's just what they are... cheap.

At his age, he (and you, the funding source) need durable & readily available parts in case of breakage, and it will happen. An RTR kit will get you going as cheap as possible. You'll still need a decent charger & at least 2 3000 mAh batteries.

Getting back to the breakage. A few sets of extra A-arms,tie-rods, camber blocks (also known as C-blocks), & e-clips are good to always have on hand. Curbs, trees, & parked cars tend to jump out in front of R/C cars as the least expected time.

Click this link, IMO this is your best band for the buck.

It's been awhile but I'd also say Traxxas. Durable, great support system. Pep Boys sells them now along with spare parts.

I had a 4TEC, I dont think it ever got to 2nd gear, but that thing moved. I would get a stadium truck if anything.

hello people; I have a memory from the begining of my RC days. There was a guy who would get a bunch of carpeting and PVC tubing and set up tracks in a few differant school gyms on weekends.. But there was this kid there and he had the best of everything. And one night an older well dressed couple made an apperance. They where the kids parents. So after a race the farther came over and asked the kid how he did. The kid said like 3rd and then the farther started blasting the him saying like "all that money I spent and you came in 3rd" I had to hold my breath.
But what a bonehead.
RC is a great learning tool for kids and adults but have fun.
