hello people; I kinda feel the same way. Just talking about it gives me a thought about doing it again. I'am in Mass. and I use to go to NH and Conn. and I don't want to do that part of it again. But you never know?

I've been into this for 30+yrs, have dozens.
I would without a doubt get a associated rc18t or rc18mt for a beginner.
Parts if you can break it are usually everywhere, super easy to work or and farm near zero maint unless you want upgraded for fun, those are easy to get too.
Once he gets better at driving there are upgrades like a mamba set up that is bolt on.
I've had one for about 3 years and is the most used and just recently broke my shock tower. went to the hobby shop and $4 later I finished off the battery run. Best beginner IMO. And built by the best name in the business IMO.

Another MGT 8.0 here... I've busted the hell out of that thing repeatedly but it is pretty darn tough. Definitely not for a beginner though.

Spring is almost here... I'll be firing the thing up pretty soon. There's great local hobby shop with parts in stock and there's also a track extremely close to my house. One thing I can say is if you have a local shop, purchase a car which they keep in stock and support. There's nothing better than having a local parts source for when you break something and want to get back up and running in a timely manner. Waiting for mail order replacement parts would be a drag.

For Christmas Santa brought my 7 year old son and myself Team Losi Mini T Desert Trucks. Long story short we have 4 of them now, one for every family member. They cost cost $130 for everything (truck, battery, charger, and radio). So far our worst crash (he ripped the whole front off) only cost $15.00. Normally they are under $5.00. They are fast enough to have fun, but not enough were they can't control them. The aftermarket support for them is tremendous.

I'm getting back into R/Cs too. I just picked up an Old Skool Clod Buster for myself earlier this week. The aftermarket for this thing is just stupid. Anything is possible!!! I can't wait to launch off of his Losi with it!!! :D

i'd go electric and find a suitable place to run it

i got into it with one i picked up at a flea market about 3 yrs back. wasnt real fast so i bought a 4tec, talk about flying, that thing will do about 70mph no joke. i've broke that thing so many times it's insane. i'd suggest the guy who has 4 and the parts are inexpensive as a starter. good luck and maybe you could even look on craigslist for a used one just incase he looses interest. just a thought, i know i have and my 2 are collecting dust. parts aren't cheap on the 2 i have but then again it depends on what i break.

i would go with a traxxas slash, corr trucks are very popular right now and you can get parts cheap and upgrade motors as he gets better,
with a brushless and lipo setup you can eat nitro rc's with it!
and they are very durable.
heres mine planning on getting a bug body soon.

Man does that bring back the memories... I had one of those bad boys back in the day. Put a '49 Merc body on it. The shape was very forgiving for rollover situations :D

I see the Tamiya "retro" cars for sale at the hobby shop and they want more money for those old kits than the brand new RTR stuff.

Between the ages of 10 and 16 I must've gone through 40+ different RC cars... started with a GrassHopper. In the end I had an RC10, a YZ10, and a badazz Schumacher Cat. Raced every weekend and often several times during the week! It was my crack cocaine until I could drive real cars ;)

They kept me out of a lot of trouble when I was younger. I still have my Lynx II Elite, Hornet, Lunchbox, and Blackfoot. Of course in the day I only had one radio and ESC. :D But the Clod was the one I always wanted!!! This one is a little rough. But I already have parts coming for it. Hopefully in a week or two it will be up and hunting the Mini T. :D

One good thing about the retros is they fixed the problems that the originals had. Like the dogbones on the Blackfoot. Within two weeks mine were always trashed. The new Frog has CVTs like the Losi's and Associates.

my USA1 will walk all over your clod buster... LOL

I've got 5 RC10s (gold pans) for those that know what that is. Could be the Best car ever made.

i my first rc was a gold pan rc10. i always wanted a grasshopper

I have a Nitro RC. I think its Maaxtraax for some reason. Very very fast. Shoots from 0-60 like a rocket.. Very fun also. Im going to fish it out and start playing with it this weekend :D.

Wow. How much do you spend on your RC cars? I found the local hobby shop has them for $350 brand new and then I have to buy the charger and a few other things for it. In the end he said I'd have an easy $500 just getting started. And that's not counting parts.

each one of my rc8t's are 1,500 the way they sit (just the car, servos, motor, etc) my MGT 8.0 about the same.

I've got a broken Traxxas Jato sitting in the basement collecting dust.

Spring is here...I may have to pull it out, fix it, and go break it again. ;)

That thing is just stupid fast.

I had a grasshopper. The only cool thing about it was the paddle tires. Didn't work well in the sand though, but the snow was fun.
One of my first cars was a bolink.
2 of my gold pans I had in the 80s I still have. One of which I have the box it came in.

hello people; I had a rc10t it was a 2wd stadium truck it was fun. I got out of the dirt and went on road. But the start up of any hobby is expensive and after that you can just maintaine what you have or follow all the latest and greatest and go broke.

This thread got me thinking about some of the cars I had back when... so I looked up a few. One was the Tamiya Avante 4WD. Turns out that thing is a big dollar collector toy these days that fetches stupid $ in "restored" condition, and super stupid $ for new in the box condition. Back then it was a broken POS that couldn't hold a candle to a Schumacher Cat or a Yokomo. Go figure....
