the rear main is leaking very bad, and I do believe that it has the original rope seals still. the engine has 29,000. I want to get away from the original and go to the Neoprene seals. Are they hard to install and which way are they installed? Thanks

When I have done it, there was not a rope seal in it - don't know if the rope seal can be fully removed with the crank in the engine

Replacement of the rear main is not that hard, make sure that you take your time and that you have the tools and items needed to do the job properly. Take a look at this Rear Main Seal Replacement, it will give you a run down on what is needed and how to go about installing a new rear main seal.

Hope this helps.
