I was wondering if any of the stereo gurus on here could advise me on some rear speaker sizes and or brands. I have the infinity reference 3 1/2s in the dash and 5000 cs components in the doors which sound great but currently have boston accoustic 5x7s on the rear deck and I know I can do alot better than those.

I was thinkig of going with another set of infinity 6000cs 6 1/2 components back there but i am not sure if it would help or hurt the sound with rear components. I also plan on running a single 10 inch sub for the bass but for the regular speakers would like a nice clean crisp sound without breaking the bank

Any suggestions on what I plan on running or any other setups that have been set up in your cars to achieve a really good sound quality. I dont need to wake up the neighborhood but want a good setup that covers all the frequencies of the music for a full sound.

thanks,
Jim

I don't run a rear speaker in my SQ car. I use the factory rear speaker openings as vents out of the trunk for the sub-bass. Gives me more volume without having to carve on the foam in the seat. In a SQ type setup the rear fill should only sound like the 'reflections from the rear of the concert hall'.

So are you just running the door and dash speakers with the sub? does it stilll have a good fulll sound or is it just set up for Db. What kind of subs are you running. I was thinking of a single high powered 10 or 12
I have heard alot of cars with highs and lows but seems like they are missing some of the midbass and thats what i am trying to avoid.

Like you, I am trying to achieve clean, powerful sound without earth shaking bass. My setup is: Infinity kappas in dash and doors with reference 6x9's in the rear window platform and a 10" sub, all powered by two amps.
I am not happy! No matter how I adjust the amps and head unit, the back speakers dominate. The sound quality isn't bad, just too directional when I reach the volume I want.
I am now playing with putting a speaker with its own amp in place of the glovebox as I don't really need it for storage. First test last night showed a fair improvement but still having to crank the head unit too high to achieve higher volumes.
Bottom line, the rear speakers seem to cause the most difficulty in getting headphone type results. HTH

My system consists of the following:
Alpine 7995 feeding a Pre-Amp, Linear Power PA-II feeding a X-over, Linear Power XO-II. The sub-bass signal goes to a fader, then to a Linear Power 5002 (1700 watts mono) playing a pair of Polk DB12's (ported at 32 hz). The high pass signal from the X-over patches back into the pre-amp. The signal is then feed into a Linear Power XO-3 x-over which splits the signal 3 ways. The low pass is used for mid-bass feeding a Linear Power DPS-500 (300 wpc), playing a pair of Blues 6 1/2 mid-bass drivers in custome made door panels. The mid and high range signals feed a Linear Power Q-50 (150 wpc) 4 channel amp, playing Image Dynamics 5 1/4 and silk dome tweeters in the kick panels.

Using this setup, I have complete control of each signal path feeding each set of drivers. I can control the x-over points and gains at the x-overs and amps. I can make the car sound bass heavy, like a DB set-up (142 db, my best sound pressure) or I can make the car sound like a SQ set-up (think IASCA, 125 db max sound pressure).

It helps having the help of a couple of friends that have been competing in contests since the 80's, like myself. Ray owns a speaker company and a electronics repair shop. He understands all the physics in what is happening and can explain why something will or will not work. Jimmy has worked on several cars that have placed in the top five of the various sound-off contest nationals. We all share the same passion for music.

Power - when you go to a concert you don't face the back of the arena. You need to either eliminate your rear speakers, cut the power feeding them, or put a crossover on them to get only mid-bass out of them. I also consider the dash speakers to be too directional. It makes the car side bias.

saleen01 - I hope this give the explination you were looking for. I found it hard to get enough mid-bass when using 5 1/4's in the factory location. In the past I did use a 6x9 with crossover in the rear, but limited it to only mid-bass (80-300 hz).

Not trying to hijack, but John you have helped a lot of us with your replies. Thank you. There are a lot of us trying to achieve better than average sound ourselves and don't know quite what we're doing.
BTW, do you have any pictures of your interior you can share?

I'd have to dig them out and scan them. They were taken before I got a digital camera. The system is (was) in my wrecked 86 GN. I currently have the car torn down inspecting the damage to the body and frame to determine if the car is savable. I plan on moving the system to my 87 GN and while I'm at it I'll update some componets of the stereo. Mostly wiring and install, maybe new mids and tweets (high end Kicker set).

You can get a very good sound in these cars. It just takes patience. Of course, having built systems for alot of G bodies helps. My GN's have had multiple systems in them over the years, at least 10 between the two cars.

There are a couple of other guys on here with serious systems, Audiowizard (who built my door pods) and Zam70. Maybe they will chime in.

John,
thanks for the advice. I am pretty happy with the infinity up front but like you i know once i put the subs in i will be looking for the midbass. I like most of the sound in front of me and then I can have the bass in the back since it is not directional like the mids and highs. I will end up doing a similar setup to yours since i dont want any flat areas in the music. I have heard too many with highs and mids straight to subs and leaving too much of a gap.

Im really happy with my setup, very clear clean sound from the Rockford Fosgate 3.5s and 6x9s. Need a little more mids though. For now it works. Check it out at www.sounddomain.com/id/8uwith6 , second page.

It seems most kids now only want BOOM and HISS. A bunch of sub-bass, some midrange and lots of tweeter. How loud can it get, not how realistic or good it sounds. Did a system this weekend for a kid in an extra cab truck. 4 12's with a big Rockford amp and a pair of 4x6's in the dash power by the radio. He was only interested in bumpin.
