Hi I am new to this site and I have a quick question. I have an all stock 85 t-type and was wondering if a 4.10 gear would be to much.

I run 4.56s and there just hell to live with n the streets.

I do 5800 rpm at 60mph.

no fun with a 25 mile drive to work.

never messed with higher gears myself, so not speaking from experience, but everything i've read on the board from all the experts says that GM did a great job of gearing these cars. the 3.42 keeps the motor right in its power curve 'sweet spot'. Now if you're doing some SERIOUS drag racing and have a diff trans or very built motor that of course could change, but otherwise i think the consensus is to stick with the stock ratio.

Since the stock motor is out of breath around 4800-5000 rpm, I would stick with the stock gears.
To find out what the "best gear ratio" is, you should take it to the track, and see what RPM you pass the line at. From there, based on the combo, you calculate it backwards.
You will find that the stock ratio is very good, especially for a stock set-up, and if your trap RPM is too high, get a slightly bigger diameter tire on it.
Hope this helps.

i ran 3.90s in mine for years and liked them, i switched back to 3.42s recently, i should have kept the 3.90s in

OK, I made some REAL BAD assumptions!
Tell us what you will be using the car for and we can give a better idea.

If you run short distances, big sticky tires, and/or run 1/8 mile, the advice will be different if you plan to run longer distances, ¼ mile, smaller tires, etc.
I ASS-U-Me-d you are going to race the car, in stock form, down the ¼ mile track.

If sticky tires, 1/8 mile, not enough power to pull the car to 5200 rpm through the traps AND stock cam on a HA, I would put in the 3.73s or 3.90's.
Remember, this is just an opinion. Never changed the rear in my car either.
