What is the best way to refinish blackout trim? Is powdercoating the only way to go to make it last? I want to have the trim around the rear quarter glass, the windshield, and b-pillars redone.

The way I redid mine was scuffed it with a real fine scoth brite (the gray stuff). I paint preped them, then hit them with a self etching primer & had my body/paint guy paint them with marhide's gm satin black paint. Cost me $65 to redo all the trim.

Powdercoating may be more durable but this way looks original and cheaper. Just my $.02. Its holding up great 2 years so far.

Sand to remove rough spots. Clean with Prep-Sol or equivalent. Spray with a couple of coats of SEM Self Etching Primer. Then spray with couple of coats of SEM Trim Black. Wait two days and install. Hard as a rock.

SEM is at Warehouse Paints and other stores.

Besides, powder coating could be risky, they could very well melt your parts. The above advice works really well.

I appreciate the tips. Where can I get the tool to remove the trim from the quarter glass and windshield? I already figured out the b-pillar trim.

Any tips on safe removal using the tool would be appreciated too. :)

The 1/4 side windows have to be unbolted from the inside. And the trim doesn't always come apart from the glass. You might get lucky and then again you might not. :(

When you get the tool to remove your windshield moulding and rear window moulding, be advised to be very careful you don't crack your windshield while removing the mouldings. It's quite easy to snag the edge of the glass with the tool and crack it. Also, if you're not painting the car, I would skip removing the quarter windows to repaint the trim. Just mask and paint them on the car. No downsides doing it on the car but you'll save yourself a lot of time and trouble. ;)
