I am installing a extended intercooler in my 87 GN but cannot remove the passenger side intercooler bracket. I removed the nut that holds it to the block(?) but it won't come off........it feels like there is another bolt holding it on but I can't see or feel it. Also, I have to remove the front renforcing bars that bolt to the front crossember and the core support.....My question: how do you remove the nuts on the inside of the front crossember or is the crossmember threaded .

Thanks guys!

Normally there are plain thru-holes on the x-member. Holes had to be threaded by whoever installed the frame braces.

Some people will force in an oversize bolt and try to form a thread with an impact wrench. If this is the case, you need to be careful of any potential cross-threading or stripping out threads when removing or reinstalling bolts.

I opted to tap the threads 7/16”-14.

Re: passenger side intercooler bracket, there's supposed to be (from my memory!) :
1) a stud with hex wrench flat into the engine block, then
2) the bracket, and finally
3) a nut.

Is it possible 1 & 2 got installed swapped sometime? ie, there's both a nut AND the wrench-flatted stud holding down the bracket? It can be a little hard to see.

Thank you for your reply Tom! I thought the bracket was held on by the stud you mentioned but when I removed the nut it looked free to come right off...but I'll check again.

Again, thank you for your help!

I just took a quick look at my 87, and on the same stud there's also mounted a black, hard plastic bracket-type thing that routes the alternator wire to the batt. (the wire takes a screwy path).

This plastic bracket normally sits on top of the metal Intercooler bracket. Then the nut holds both brackets onto the stud.

So it may not be obvious there's another intereference to removing the metal IC bracket, especially if it's dark down there or covered with oil/grease.

Really hard to figure things out without pictures!
