Can billet main bearing caps be reused on a different motor?? I know it'll require a line bore job, but are the caps themselves reusable?

TIA,

Richard,

If the caps fit in the registers of the new block and are honed after they are installed there shouldn't be a problem re-using them.

So, does most (or all) of the material from the line boring come off of the block and not the caps?

It will depend most on how the caps fit in the new block's registers. If there is no crush there, buy new caps. If they fit the registers tightly or will with material removal, try them. They'll require taking some material off of them and a hone, at least.

I tried using my old billet caps on my 3.8 and then the 4.1 and on both they were a solid 1/4" offset on both. The motor they were line bored to must've really been off. After seeing this I wouldn't try to reuse them on a different block.

So, does most (or all) of the material from the line boring come off of the block and not the caps?

Line boring only takes a few thousands off the CAP mating surface. Nothing is removed from the block mating surface. The caps are installed, and the line bore rig removes material from both block and cap BORES to make things round again.

HTH,
