I'm having a bit of a problem with the motor bogging down and my idle jumping up when I shift the car into reverse. Heres the story.. I replaced my tranny non BRF with a built BRF unit I bought from a trusted friend. (I know the tranny is good) the changes that I made were converting it back from non-lockup to lockup. Simple swap out of valves, no pump mod was done to it. We have been trying to figure this out, and he mentioned that there may be something wrong in the lockup valving causing the converter to lock up in reverse.

In a nutshell:
"The converter lockup clutch is pressurized from a source of regulated line pressure through a lockup clutch control valve, which directs pressure to either of two passages to apply and release the clutch. The control valve is supplied with control pressure from a solenoid-operated valve that produces high and low fluid pressure states corresponding to commands to engage and release the lockup clutch. A second control pressure, opposing the effect of the solenoid-operated control pressure, is applied to the control valve when the vehicle operator manually selects certain gear ratios, principally the lowest forward and reverse gear ratios. A line pressure regulator valve produces line pressure whose magnitude is proportional to the magnitude of a control pressure representing a commanded engine torque output. The pressure produced when the vehicle operator manually selects low gear ratios is applied also to the main regulator valve, which produces a line pressure that varies linearly with engine torque control pressure and increases, in comparison to line pressure at all other gear ratios, when low gear ratios are selected. A converter regulator valve limits the level of line pressure directed by the main regulator valve to the converter clutch control valve."

This makes sense, and if it is the problem, how do I fix it? The lockup valve worked fine in my old tranny, and locks up fine in 3rd and 4th in the new tranny?

come on trans guys someone should be able to point us in the right direction .:) It's a well build low mileage HD Trans that was road tested and then taken out within less than 30 mins of road test (as soon as it cooled down) .. Trans preformed great during road test and has always ran great with no issues before it was pulled and it has never had any issues like mentioned above . The only thing is it was converted back to Lock up by Paul (quicktoy) . from what I can gather/figure out from what is known . it looks like the TC "maybe" locking up in reverse thus putting a load on the engine . But then again I'm not a trans builder . :) ANY help will be VERY WELCOMED !

From what I understand, the fluid path for the lock-up is such that it's impossible for the lock-up to be applied in reverse or 1st gear. I would suspect that your trouble has something to do with the conversion from non-LU to LU but I'm no tranny guru, just a victim of LU problems in the past (and present).

Thanks for your input Jimmy.

Is there no help from the experts anymore??? Where the heck is everybody?
Chris, Greg?

FWIW
I fixed the problem. It was a modded lockup valve causing the problem. A big thank you to Donnie Wang.
