Just finished replacing my rod and main bearings because I didn't catch my stk timing chain in time and it was putting some alum. through the bearings thanks to the oil pump bypass opening. I found this when I dropped the pan to clean the pump screen and do the rear main seal. The bearings weren't bad but had enough small alum. particles in the edges of them that I didn't feel comfortable putting them back in w/ 109K on the engine.

My question is this: do some engines come with .001 oversize mains from the factory? The rods didn't have a spec. on them so I figured they were std. On the stk mains, the #1 #3 and #4 have what appears to be a .001 on the lower bearing on the opposite side of the tang but #2 didn't have this that I could see???

I installed std bearings for the rods and .001 over for the mains.
The rods plastigauged to .0015 except for #6 which was .0018
The mains plasti'd at .0012 except for the thrust which came out right at .001 oil clearence.

These clearences show as in spec on the gnttype.org page with the rod spec being .0005 to .0026 and mains from .0003 to .0018

The reason I ask is I now have KILLER oil pressure, 35 psi at idle w/ the temp at 165 after driving 15 miles and in the high 50's at 50 mph. I added a biggie oil filter kit along with a TA performance booster plate which plastigauged to .003-.004 when torqued to spec. My stock pump was .005. I also put a temporary freeze plug in the bypass so I can hopefully catch the rest of the alum. that may be floating around the engine then remove the plug once nothing is showing up in the filters as I cut them open.

Do I have any future problems with this??

TIA

Any more opinions :D

So far Nick and Lee say good to go, Jay says she's a little tight.

Hey......little tight but what are you gonna' do? You already have put it together. All you can do is hope for the best. I would just drive it easy for a while.

Drive it like it's good to go.

As they scuff in you'll probably lose a few at hot idle.

Yes, I've seen .001s in a reportedly virgin block.

If your not running EGR, you can crank the cruise timing back to resonable amounts and help keep the oil even cooler. In the 96 KV8 area of the timing 32-34d is plenty. I run 28ish.

Careful Mark, I made the mistake of running a stock size filter with a plugged bypass on a fresh motor once. The filter collapsed and fed filter media to the crank and rods destroying the crank. If you're not using a larger filter then you probably should.

What brand filter did that?.

AC PF 47 Gold. Top of the line AC filter. The combination of small filter, plugged bypass, cold oil and 2500 RPM for cam break-in was just too much flow for the filter to take. It collapsed at the seam that you see when you look into the filter. AC Delco came and took pictures but declined any reimbursement due to the fact that the motor had "racing" parts in it. $1300 to repair, and I did all the work myself. A lesson learned. Run bigger filters if you plug the bypass.;)

In his post he wrote that he added a biggie filter kit so he should be OK there.

Thanks for the warning REEDOG, with the biggie and a mobil1 synthetic filter and 10w30 I'm hoping things will be ok. I also wait to see 100 degrees on the temp before I drive it for more insurance of good oil flow and hopefully not overdoing the filter.

After a 30 min drive and letting the car idle for 5 min while I cleaned up the garage the oil pressure settled to 30 in park and drive so far so things are looking good. A few more miles and I'll start slowly running the boost up.

35 @ Idle is hi IMO. Whats that when its cold?? I run 22 idle and mine pegs the guage when cold. I havent blown a filter apart ever, but i run a Baldwin filter. After seeing a cutaway of a Baldwin, Wix, AC and Fram, a Baldwin is well worth it Fact ;)

Re: .001 bearings...the turbo engines received hand-matched bearings from the factory, so they did mix in some other-than-standard sizes to achieve optimum clearance.

Want a little lower pressure? Run a little lighter-weight oil. Sounds like it came out well for you. Congrats.
