I know that there was a post earlier on from 2-3rd, but i have a rough shift from 3rd to 4th. It seems that i also have that problem but it only seems that shifts go easily when i go into spooling. Itll drive no problem onto an onramp but around town i find that i almost have to step on it a little to have it shift smoothly without having to cruise in 3rd at almost 3000rpm (only by ear, no tach). This car was a complete mystery when i bought it which was my first problem. Replacing the needed parts overall, the transmission is the only thing i havent touched. Could this need a new transsmission or can this problem be a simple few parts as read before?

Is there anyone who has ran a built 200R4 from GN1 or are there better options out there to include a rebuild from a TR shop that is close to me? Idk whether that would cost less and make me more happy or just buy one to slap it on...

Mines bumpy when it shifts if the TV cable is too tight and the converter locks before the 3-4 shift :P

I am located in central PA, I just had the cable replaced. I had a crappy aftermarket one on. I just found a hell of a fuel leak this morning, ill fix that first...I just had a new pump, Hotwire, regulator, and of course I have a line leak...but I can travel for a shop eventually. Ohio would be a trip, obviously ill try closer. I'd probably just drop the trans and load it on the truck. That might be waiting till the summer. I'd just like to do my homework. Can anyone explain what the shift kit is all about? I hear a lot about it yet I haven't really seen it.. Still learning, forgive my ignorance.

Shift kits or Shift Recalibration kits shorten & firm up shifts.
Some are crudely designed causing very hard banging shifts and can be harmful to the Tran's internal parts, U-Joints etc.., such as B&M kits. Well designed kits such as CK's will extend Trans life while increasing performance, they include Boost Valves, Shift Valve, Pressure Reg. & Accumulator Springs, Separator Plate, Gaskets etc.. to raise Line & Boost pressures, reroute & increase fluid flow to provide a firm quick shift without causing damage to internal Trans & Driveline parts.

Would anyone really recommend this for everyday driving? I'm still in the process of making everything work 100% before I move onto performance parts. Scanmaster next month, but I was on the fence how I want to approach the transmission. Do I shoot for a refurb or do I go with a stage II from NC. I'm blanking on the shop name. I'm not positive I want to run the track yet but I think I want to have that experience. It kinda been a small dream to have a number I can say I went down the 1/4 mile...

Your Trans problems/symptoms sound like a problem with the TV/Throttle Valve or TV Plunger, binding/sticking at light/part throttle, an easy fix for a Trans Shop.

As for the "rough 3-4 shift" this from an ATSG manual.
TV cable = mispositioned/misadjusted.
TV valve & plunger = Binding.
TV Limit Valve = Binding.
3-4 Accumuator = Piston stuck. Bore damage.
Forth Clutch = Piston Binding.

A good Shift Kit wont be a problem for everyday street driving & will actually reduce Trans wear. The shifts will be mild at light/part throttle & progressively firmer with more throttle.
You may not need a Trans rebuild/overhaul. But, if you do & already have a BR coded GN trans, you can just have it rebuilt.
