So I picked up some purple ice and distilled water for the CTS-V and after adding it all I read the label on the Purple Ice. It states:

"Distilled water and/or softened water should not be used in your radiator. Contact our tech department if you're considering using Purple Ice with straight water or if you've previously used a different brand of coolant."

I plan to email and/or call them and inquire, but was wondering if anyone knew or had any ideas. Down in SoCal I rarely use antifreeze, and never do in the Buick. Always just distilled and a water wetter or Purple Ice. Guess I should have read the directions before using, huh?!

Well, here we go. Here is the reply from PI:

Good Morning James,

The reason why we do not recommend distilled water with a straight water mixture is because distilled water is a much more active substance regarding corrosion, than filtered bottled drinking water. Distilled can initiate corrosion and galvanic corrosion more aggressively than filtered drinking water. Using distilled is a non-issue when using fresh antifreeze in a 50/50 mixture, however with a mixture at or near straight water we recommend against using distilled water and instead using bottled filtered drinking water like you would find typically available at your local grocery store.

We also recommend against using Purple Ice with other radiator additives as there may be unintended chemical reactions. Unfortunately, there are too many for us to evaluate independently.

If you do a good coolant flush and start with fresh filtered drinking water, then you could expect excellent results with Purple Ice. If you prefer not to go to that extra step then we recommend not using Purple Ice, because of the unknown compatibility with the other coolant additive recently used. The dosing for Purple Ice in straight water is two ounces per quart of system capacity. The dose with 50/50 water/antifreeze is approximately one ounce per quart.

Thank you for choosing Royal Purple and have a great day!
